JEE MainPhysicsProperties of MatterMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). Assertion (A) : The property of body, by virtue of which it tends to regain its original shape when the external force is removed, is Elasticity. Reason (R) : The restoring force depends upon the bonded inter atomic and inter molecular force of solid. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. A
    (A) is false but (R) is true
  2. B
Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)
  3. C
Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
  4. D
    (A) is true but (R) is false

Correct answer: C

  1. Analyze the Assertion (A)

Assertion: The property of body, by virtue of which it tends to regain its original shape when the external force is removed, is Elasticity.

This is the standard definition of elasticity.

    Hence, Assertion (A) is true.

  2. Analyze the Reason (R)

Reason: The restoring force depends upon the bonded inter-atomic and inter-molecular force of solid.

In a solid, when it is deformed, atoms/molecules are displaced from their equilibrium positions. Due to intermolecular/interatomic forces, a restoring force arises which tends to bring them back to their original configuration.

    Hence, Reason (R) is true.

  3. Check whether (R) explains (A)

Elasticity is the tendency of a body to regain its original shape after removal of deforming force. This tendency exists because deformation creates restoring forces due to interatomic/intermolecular bonding.

Therefore, the reason correctly explains why elasticity occurs.

  4. Evaluate the options

    • A: (A) is false but (R) is true Incorrect
    • B: Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A) Incorrect
    • C: Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A) Correct
    • D: (A) is true but (R) is false Incorrect

Therefore, the correct option is C.
