  1. Let the cube have total volume VVV.

    Suppose:

    • volume immersed in water =Vw= V_w=Vw​
    • volume immersed in kerosene =Vk= V_k=Vk​

    Since the cube floats partly in both liquids, Vw+Vk=VV_w + V_k = VVw​+Vk​=V

  2. Use the condition of floating equilibrium.
    Weight of ice === total buoyant force due to water and kerosene.

    Density relation using specific gravity:

    • density of ice =0.9ρw= 0.9\rho_w=0.9ρw​
    • density of kerosene =0.8ρw= 0.8\rho_w=0.8ρw​
    • density of water =ρw= \rho_w=ρw​

    Therefore, ρiceVg=ρwVwg+ρkVkg\rho_{ice} V g = \rho_w V_w g + \rho_k V_k gρice​Vg=ρw​Vw​g+ρk​Vk​g

  3. Use V=Vw+VkV = V_w + V_kV=Vw​+Vk​.

    Substitute into the equation: 0.9(Vw+Vk)=Vw+0.8Vk0.9(V_w + V_k) = V_w + 0.8V_k0.9(Vw​+Vk​)=Vw​+0.8Vk​
