JEE MainPhysicsMotion in A Straight LineMCQ+4 / −1
A passenger sitting in a train A moving at 90 km/h90 \mathrm{~km} / \mathrm{h}90 km/h observes another train B\mathrm{B}B moving in the opposite direction for 8 s8 \mathrm{~s}8 s. If the velocity of the train B is 54 km/h54 \mathrm{~km} / \mathrm{h}54 km/h, then length of train B is:
  1. A
    80 m
  2. B
    200 m
  3. C
    120 m
  4. D
    320 m

Correct answer: D

  1. Given data

    • Speed of train A=90 km/hA = 90\,\text{km/h}A=90km/h
    • Speed of train B=54 km/hB = 54\,\text{km/h}B=54km/h
    • Trains are moving in opposite directions
    • Time for which passenger observes train B=8 sB = 8\,\text{s}B=8s
  2. Relative speed of train BBB with respect to passenger in train AAA

    Since the trains move in opposite directions, vrel=90+54=144 km/hv_{\text{rel}} = 90 + 54 = 144\,\text{km/h}vrel=90+54=144km/h

    Convert into m/s: 144×518=40 m/s144\times \frac{5}{18} = 40\,\text{m/s}144×185=40m/s

  3. Interpretation of the observation

A passenger is effectively a point object. If he sees the whole train BBB pass by in 8 8\,8s, then in relative motion, train BBB covers a distance equal to its own length in this time.

So, Length of train B=vrel×t\text{Length of train }B = v_{\text{rel}} \times tLength of train B=vrel×t

  4. Calculate the length LB=40×8=320 mL_B = 40 \times 8 = 320\,\text{m}LB=40×8=320m

  5. Check options

    • A: 80 80\,80m ❌
    • B: 200 200\,200m ❌
    • C: 120 120\,120m ❌
    • D: 320 320\,320m ✅

Therefore, the correct answer is Option D.
