Correct answer: D: 1 : 2

  1. Interpret the velocity–time graph

    From the graph, the motion is piecewise linear over 000 to 10 s10\,\text{s}10s:

    • From t=0t=0t=0 to t=4 st=4\,\text{s}t=4s, velocity is positive and forms a triangle above the time axis.
    • From t=4t=4t=4 to t=10 st=10\,\text{s}t=10s, velocity is negative and forms a triangle below the time axis.

    Displacement is the signed area under the vvv–ttt graph, while distance is the sum of magnitudes of these areas.

  2. Area from 000 to 4 s4\,\text{s}4s

    The graph shows a triangle of base 4 s4\,\text{s}4s and height 2 m/s2\,\text{m/s}2m/s.

    A1=12×4×2=4 mA_1=\frac{1}{2}\times 4 \times 2=4\,\text{m}A1=21×4×2=4m

    Since it is above the axis, contribution to displacement is +4 m+4\,\text{m}+4m.

  3. Area from 444 to 10 s10\,\text{s}10s

    The graph shows a triangle below the axis with base 6 s6\,\text{s}6s and height 4 m/s4\,\text{m/s}4m/s.

    A2=12×6×4=12 mA_2=\frac{1}{2}\times 6 \times 4=12\,\text{m}A2=21×6×4=12m

    Since it is below the axis, contribution to displacement is −12 m-12\,\text{m}−12m.

  4. Calculate displacement

    Displacement=A1−A2=4−12=−8 m\text{Displacement}=A_1-A_2=4-12=-8\,\text{m}Displacement=A1−A2=4−12=−8m

    Its magnitude is 8 m8\,\text{m}8m.

  5. Calculate distance travelled

    Distance=∣A1∣+∣A2∣=4+12=16 m\text{Distance}=|A_1|+|A_2|=4+12=16\,\text{m}Distance=∣A1∣+∣A2∣=4+12=16m

  6. Required ratio

    displacementdistance=816=12\frac{\text{displacement}}{\text{distance}}=\frac{8}{16}=\frac{1}{2}distancedisplacement=168=21

    Hence,

    displacement:distance=1:2\text{displacement} : \text{distance} = 1:2displacement:distance=1:2

  7. Correct option

    Option D is correct.

  8. Comparison with stored answer

    The stored correct answer is B: 1:31:31:3, but the ratio obtained from the graph is 1:21:21:2.

    So the stored answer appears to be incorrect.
