Wires 111 and 222 carrying currents i1i{}_1i1 and i2i{}_2i2 respectively are inclined at an angle θ\thetaθ to each other. What is the force on a small element dldldl of wire 222 at a distance of rrr from wire 111(as shown in figure) due to the magnetic field of wire 111? Correct answer: C

  1. Magnetic field due to wire 1
    For a long straight wire carrying current i1i_1i1, the magnetic field at a perpendicular distance rrr is
B1=μ0i12πr.B_1=\frac{\mu_0 i_1}{2\pi r}.B1=2πrμ0i1.
  1. Force on a current element of wire 2
    A small element dℓd\elldℓ of wire 2 carrying current i2i_2i2 experiences magnetic force
dF⃗=i2 dℓ⃗×B⃗.d\vec F=i_2\, d\vec \ell \times \vec B.dF=i2dℓ×B.

Hence magnitude is

dF=i2 dℓ B1sin⁡ϕ,dF=i_2\, d\ell\, B_1\sin\phi,dF=i2dℓB1sinϕ,

where ϕ\phiϕ is the angle between dℓ⃗d\vec\elldℓ and B⃗\vec BB.

  1. Determine the angle between wire 2 and magnetic field
    The magnetic field due to wire 1 is circular around wire 1 and lies perpendicular to wire 1.
    If wire 2 makes an angle θ\thetaθ with wire 1, then the angle between wire 2 and the magnetic field is
ϕ=90∘−θ.\phi=90^\circ-\theta.ϕ=90∘−θ.

Therefore,

sin⁡ϕ=sin⁡(90∘−θ)=cos⁡θ.\sin\phi=\sin(90^\circ-\theta)=\cos\theta.sinϕ=sin(90∘−θ)=cosθ.
  1. Substitute into force expression
    So,
dF=i2dℓ(μ0i12πr)cos⁡θ.dF=i_2 d\ell \left(\frac{\mu_0 i_1}{2\pi r}\right)\cos\theta.dF=i2dℓ(2πrμ0i1)cosθ.

Thus,

dF=μ02πri1i2 dℓ cos⁡θ\boxed{dF=\frac{\mu_0}{2\pi r} i_1 i_2 \, d\ell\, \cos\theta}dF=2πrμ0i1i2dℓcosθ
  1. Match with options
    This corresponds to Option C.

  2. Comparison with stored answer
    Stored correct answer: C
    Derived answer: C
    So they agree.
