Consider the ground state of Cr atom (Z = 24). The number of electrons with the azimuthal quantum numbers, l = 1 and 2 are respectively
  1. A
    16 and 4
  2. B
    12 and 5
  3. C
    12 and 4
  4. D

Correct answer: B

  1. Write the ground-state electronic configuration of chromium

For chromium, Z=24Z=24Z=24.

Due to the extra stability of half-filled ddd-subshell, the ground-state configuration is:

Cr=[Ar] 3d54s1\text{Cr} = [\text{Ar}]\,3d^5 4s^1Cr=[Ar]3d54s1

Expanded form:

1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d5 4s11s^2\,2s^2\,2p^6\,3s^2\,3p^6\,3d^5\,4s^11s22s22p63s23p63d54s1

  1. Relate azimuthal quantum number lll to subshells
  • l=0⇒sl=0 \Rightarrow sl=0⇒s
  • l=1⇒pl=1 \Rightarrow pl=1⇒p
  • l=2⇒dl=2 \Rightarrow dl=2⇒d

So we need the number of electrons in:

  • all ppp-subshells for l=1l=1l=1
  • all ddd-subshells for l=2l=2l=2
  1. Count electrons with l=1l=1l=1 (ppp-electrons)

The occupied ppp-subshells are:

  • 2p62p^62p6
  • 3p63p^63p6

Total ppp-electrons:

6+6=126+6=126+6=12

So, number of electrons with l=1l=1l=1 is:

121212

  1. Count electrons with l=2l=2l=2 (ddd-electrons)

The occupied ddd-subshell is:

  • 3d53d^53d5

Total ddd-electrons:

555

So, number of electrons with l=2l=2l=2 is:

555

  1. Match with the options

The required pair is:

(12, 5)(12,\,5)(12,5)

This corresponds to Option B.

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer: B

Our derived answer: B

They match.
