Correct answer: 50

  1. Write the balanced combustion reaction of methane

CH4+2O2→CO2+2H2O\mathrm{CH_4 + 2O_2 \rightarrow CO_2 + 2H_2O}CH4+2O2→CO2+2H2O

From the equation:

  • 111 mole of CH4\mathrm{CH_4}CH4 produces 111 mole of CO2\mathrm{CO_2}CO2.
  1. Find moles of CO2\mathrm{CO_2}CO2 produced

Given mass of CO2\mathrm{CO_2}CO2 is 22 g22\,\mathrm{g}22g.

Molar mass of CO2\mathrm{CO_2}CO2:

44 g mol−144\,\mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}}44gmol−1

So, moles of CO2\mathrm{CO_2}CO2 are

n(CO2)=2244=0.5 moln(\mathrm{CO_2})=\frac{22}{44}=0.5\,\mathrm{mol}n(CO2)=4422=0.5mol

  1. Use stoichiometric relation

Since

1 mol CH4:1 mol CO21\,\mathrm{mol\ CH_4} : 1\,\mathrm{mol\ CO_2}1mol CH4:1mol CO2

therefore, moles of methane required are also

n(CH4)=0.5 moln(\mathrm{CH_4})=0.5\,\mathrm{mol}n(CH4)=0.5mol

  1. Express in the form x×10−2x \times 10^{-2}x×10−2

0.5=50×10−20.5 = 50 \times 10^{-2}0.5=50×10−2

Hence,

x=50x=50x=50

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Stored correct answer = 505050

Our derived answer matches it.
