Correct answer: B

  1. Write the balanced combustion reaction of methane
CH4+2O2→CO2+2H2O\mathrm{CH_4 + 2O_2 \rightarrow CO_2 + 2H_2O}CH4+2O2→CO2+2H2O

From the equation,

  • 111 mole of CH4\mathrm{CH_4}CH4 produces 111 mole of CO2\mathrm{CO_2}CO2.
  1. Calculate moles of CO2\mathrm{CO_2}CO2 formed

Molar mass of CO2\mathrm{CO_2}CO2:

12+2×16=44 g mol−112 + 2\times 16 = 44\ \mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}}12+2×16=44 gmol−1

Given mass of CO2=11 g\mathrm{CO_2} = 11\ \mathrm{g}CO2=11 g,

moles of CO2=1144=0.25\text{moles of } \mathrm{CO_2} = \frac{11}{44} = 0.25moles of CO2=4411=0.25
  1. Use stoichiometric ratio

Since

CH4:CO2=1:1\mathrm{CH_4 : CO_2} = 1:1CH4:CO2=1:1

therefore,

moles of CH4=0.25\text{moles of } \mathrm{CH_4} = 0.25moles of CH4=0.25
  1. Check options
  • A: 0.350.350.35 ✗
  • B: 0.250.250.25 ✓
  • C: 0.50.50.5 ✗
  • D: 0.750.750.75 ✗

Hence, the correct answer is B.
