JEE MainChemistrySolutionsMCQ+4 / −1
A solution is made by mixing one mole of volatile liquid AAA with 3 moles of volatile liquid BBB. The vapour pressure of pure A is 200 mm Hg and that of the solution is 500 mm Hg . The vapour pressure of pure B and the least volatile component of the solution, respectively, are:
  1. A
    1400 mm Hg,A1400 \mathrm{~mm} \mathrm{~Hg}, \mathrm{A}1400 mm Hg,A
  2. B
    1400 mm Hg,B1400 \mathrm{~mm} \mathrm{~Hg}, B1400 mm Hg,B
  3. C
    600 mm Hg,A600 \mathrm{~mm} \mathrm{~Hg}, \mathrm{A}600 mm Hg,A
  4. D

Correct answer: C

  1. Use Raoult’s law for an ideal solution

For a binary solution of two volatile liquids:

Ptotal=xAPA0+xBPB0P_{\text{total}} = x_A P_A^0 + x_B P_B^0Ptotal=xAPA0+xBPB0

where:

  • xA,xBx_A, x_BxA,xB are mole fractions in liquid phase
  • PA0,PB0P_A^0, P_B^0PA0,PB0 are vapour pressures of pure AAA and BBB
  1. Find mole fractions

Given:

  • moles of A=1A = 1A=1
  • moles of B=3B = 3B=3
  • total moles =4= 4=4

So,

xA=14,xB=34x_A = \frac{1}{4}, \qquad x_B = \frac{3}{4}xA=41,xB=43

  1. Substitute known values

Given:

  • PA0=200 mm HgP_A^0 = 200\ \text{mm Hg}PA0=200 mm Hg
  • Psolution=500 mm HgP_{\text{solution}} = 500\ \text{mm Hg}Psolution=500 mm Hg

Thus,

500=14(200)+34PB0500 = \frac{1}{4}(200) + \frac{3}{4}P_B^0500=41(200)+43PB0

500=50+34PB0500 = 50 + \frac{3}{4}P_B^0500=50+43PB0

450=34PB0450 = \frac{3}{4}P_B^0450=43PB0

PB0=450×43=600 mm HgP_B^0 = 450 \times \frac{4}{3} = 600\ \text{mm Hg}PB0=450×34=600 mm Hg

So the vapour pressure of pure BBB is:

PB0=600 mm HgP_B^0 = 600\ \text{mm Hg}PB0=600 mm Hg

  1. Find the least volatile component

Less volatile substance has lower vapour pressure.

Compare:

  • PA0=200 mm HgP_A^0 = 200\ \text{mm Hg}PA0=200 mm Hg
  • PB0=600 mm HgP_B^0 = 600\ \text{mm Hg}PB0=600 mm Hg

Since 200<600200 < 600200<600, liquid AAA is less volatile.

  1. Check options
  • A: 1400 mm Hg,A1400\ \text{mm Hg}, A1400 mm Hg,A — incorrect vapour pressure
  • B: 1400 mm Hg,B1400\ \text{mm Hg}, B1400 mm Hg,B — incorrect vapour pressure and wrong component
  • C: 600 mm Hg,A600\ \text{mm Hg}, A600 mm Hg,A — correct
  • D: 600 mm Hg,B600\ \text{mm Hg}, B600 mm Hg,B — wrong least volatile component

Therefore, the correct option is C.
