In Dumas' method for estimation of nitrogen, 0.5 gram of an organic compound gave 60 mL of nitrogen collected at 300 K temperature and 715 mm Hg pressure. The percentage composition of nitrogen in the compound (Aqueous tension at 300 K=15 mmHg300 \mathrm{~K}=15 \mathrm{~mm} \mathrm{Hg}300 K=15 mmHg ) is ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}}%.

Correct answer: B

  1. Correct the pressure of dry nitrogen

In Dumas' method, the gas collected over water contains water vapour, so pressure of dry N2N_2N2 is:

PN2=715−15=700 mm HgP_{N_2} = 715 - 15 = 700\ \text{mm Hg}PN2=715−15=700 mm Hg

Convert into atm:

PN2=700760 atmP_{N_2} = \frac{700}{760}\ \text{atm}PN2=760700 atm

  1. Given data
  • Mass of organic compound =0.5 g= 0.5\,\text{g}=0.5g
  • Volume of nitrogen =60 mL=0.060 L= 60\,\text{mL} = 0.060\,\text{L}=60mL=0.060L
  • Temperature =300 K= 300\,\text{K}=300K
  • Pressure of dry nitrogen =700760 atm= \dfrac{700}{760}\,\text{atm}=760700atm
  1. Use ideal gas equation to calculate moles of nitrogen gas

n=PVRTn = \frac{PV}{RT}n=RTPV

Substitute:

n=(700760)(0.060)(0.0821)(300)n = \frac{\left(\frac{700}{760}\right)(0.060)}{(0.0821)(300)}n=(0.0821)(300)(760700)(0.060)

n≈0.0552624.63≈2.243×10−3 moln \approx \frac{0.05526}{24.63} \approx 2.243\times 10^{-3}\ \text{mol}n≈24.630.05526≈2.243×10−3 mol

  1. Mass of nitrogen present

The collected gas is molecular nitrogen, N2N_2N2.

So,

Mass of N2=n×28\text{Mass of }N_2 = n \times 28Mass of N2=n×28

=2.243×10−3×28≈0.0628 g= 2.243\times 10^{-3} \times 28 \approx 0.0628\,\text{g}=2.243×10−3×28≈0.0628g

  1. Percentage of nitrogen in the compound

%N=0.06280.5×100\%N = \frac{0.0628}{0.5}\times 100%N=0.50.0628×100

%N≈12.56%≈12.57%\%N \approx 12.56\% \approx 12.57\%%N≈12.56%≈12.57%

  1. Check options
  • A: 20.8720.8720.87 ❌
  • B: 12.5712.5712.57 ✅
  • C: 1.2571.2571.257 ❌
  • D: 18.6718.6718.67 ❌

Therefore, the correct answer is Option B.
