2025 · 23 Jan · Shift 1 · Q1

JEE MainChemistryPractical Organic ChemistryMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements: Statement I: In Lassaigne's test, the covalent organic molecules are transformed into ionic compounds. Statement II: The sodium fusion extract of an organic compound having N and S gives prussian blue colour with FeSO4\mathrm{FeSO}_4FeSO4 and Na4[Fe(CN)6]\mathrm{Na}_4\left[\mathrm{Fe}(\mathrm{CN})_6\right]Na4[Fe(CN)6] In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
  1. A
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  2. B
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  3. C
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  4. D
Statement I is true but Statement II is false

Correct answer: D

  1. Understand Statement I

In Lassaigne's test, an organic compound is fused with sodium metal so that elements like NNN, SSS, and halogens present in a covalent organic compound are converted into ionic sodium salts:

    Na+C+N→NaCN\text{Na} + C + N \rightarrow \text{NaCN}Na+C+N→NaCN 2Na+S→Na2S2\text{Na} + S \rightarrow \text{Na}_2\text{S}2Na+S→Na2S Na+X→NaX\text{Na} + X \rightarrow \text{NaX}Na+X→NaX

Thus, covalent organic molecules are effectively transformed so that their elements become detectable in ionic form.

    So, Statement I is true.

  2. Understand Statement II

If an organic compound contains both nitrogen and sulfur, then during sodium fusion:

    Na+C+N+S→NaSCN\text{Na} + C + N + S \rightarrow \text{NaSCN}Na+C+N+S→NaSCN

i.e. sodium thiocyanate is formed, not sodium cyanide.

In the test for nitrogen alone, sodium cyanide formed in the extract reacts with FeSO4\mathrm{FeSO_4}FeSO4 and then on oxidation gives Prussian blue colour due to ferric ferrocyanide formation.

But when both NNN and SSS are present, the extract forms blood-red colour with Fe3+\mathrm{Fe^{3+}}Fe3+ due to thiocyanate complex:

    Fe3++SCN−→[Fe(SCN)]2+\mathrm{Fe^{3+} + SCN^- \rightarrow [Fe(SCN)]^{2+}}Fe3++SCN−→[Fe(SCN)]2+

Therefore, saying that a compound having NNN and SSS gives Prussian blue colour with FeSO4\mathrm{FeSO_4}FeSO4 and Na4[Fe(CN)6]\mathrm{Na_4[Fe(CN)_6]}Na4[Fe(CN)6] is false.

    So, Statement II is false.

  3. Choose the correct option

    • Statement I: True
    • Statement II: False

    Hence, the correct option is:

D: Statement I is true but Statement II is false\boxed{\text{D: Statement I is true but Statement II is false}}D: Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer: D

    My derived answer: D

Therefore, the derived answer agrees with the stored correct answer.
