Practical Organic Chemistry question

2023 · 10 Apr · Shift 1 · Q11

JEE MainChemistryPractical Organic ChemistryMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements: Statement I : Aqueous solution of K 2_22 Cr 2_22 O 7_77 is preferred as a primary standard in volumetric analysis over Na 2_22 Cr 2_22 O 7_77 aqueous solution. Statement II : K 2_22 Cr 2_22 O 7_77 has a higher solubility in water than Na 2_22 Cr 2_22 O 7_77. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:
  1. A
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  2. B
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. C
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  4. D
Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Correct answer: A

  1. Check Statement I

A primary standard in volumetric analysis should be:

  • highly pure,
  • stable,
  • non-hygroscopic,
  • have high molar mass,
  • and should allow accurate weighing.

Potassium dichromate, K2Cr2O7\mathrm{K_2Cr_2O_7}K2Cr2O7, is commonly used as a primary standard oxidizing agent because it is:

  • available in pure form,
  • stable in air,
  • non-hygroscopic,
  • and can be weighed accurately.

Sodium dichromate, Na2Cr2O7\mathrm{Na_2Cr_2O_7}Na2Cr2O7, is more hygroscopic/deliquescent and is therefore less suitable as a primary standard.

So, Statement I is true.

  1. Check Statement II

Statement II says:

K2Cr2O7\mathrm{K_2Cr_2O_7}K2Cr2O7 has a higher solubility in water than Na2Cr2O7\mathrm{Na_2Cr_2O_7}Na2Cr2O7.

This is incorrect. In general, sodium salts are more soluble in water than corresponding potassium salts. In particular, Na2Cr2O7\mathrm{Na_2Cr_2O_7}Na2Cr2O7 is more soluble in water than K2Cr2O7\mathrm{K_2Cr_2O_7}K2Cr2O7.

Hence, Statement II is false.

  1. Choose the correct option
  • Statement I: True
  • Statement II: False

Therefore, the correct option is:

A\boxed{\text{A}}A

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer = A

My derived answer = A

So, the answer agrees with the stored correct answer.
