P Block Elements question

2024 · 9 Apr · Shift 1 · Q14

JEE MainChemistryP Block ElementsMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). Assertion (A) : Both rhombic and monoclinic sulphur exist as S8\mathrm{S}_8S8 while oxygen exists as O2\mathrm{O}_2O2. Reason (R) : Oxygen forms pπ−pπp \pi-p \pipπ−pπ multiple bonds with itself and other elements having small size and high electronegativity like C,N\mathrm{C}, \mathrm{N}C,N, which is not possible for sulphur. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Both (A) and (R) are correct but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)
  2. B
    (A) is correct but (R) is not correct
  3. C
    (A) is not correct but (R) is correct
  4. D
Both (A)(\mathbf{A})(A) and (R)(\mathbf{R})(R) are correct and (R)(\mathbf{R})(R) is the correct explanation of (A)(\mathbf{A})(A)

Correct answer: D

  1. Examine Assertion (A):
Assertion says: both rhombic sulphur and monoclinic sulphur exist as S8\mathrm{S}_8S8, while oxygen exists as O2\mathrm{O}_2O2.

    • Rhombic sulphur and monoclinic sulphur are two allotropes of sulphur.
    • In both these crystalline forms, the basic molecular unit is the puckered ring molecule S8\mathrm{S}_8S8.
    • Oxygen commonly exists as diatomic molecules, O2\mathrm{O}_2O2.

    Hence, Assertion (A) is correct.

  2. Examine Reason (R):
Reason says: oxygen forms pπ−pπp\pi-p\pipπ−pπ multiple bonds with itself and with small, highly electronegative elements like C and N, which is not possible for sulphur.

    • Oxygen is a second-period element with small size, so effective sideways overlap of ppp orbitals is possible.
    • Therefore oxygen readily forms pπ−pπp\pi-p\pipπ−pπ bonds, as in O2\mathrm{O}_2O2, C=O\mathrm{C=O}C=O, N=O\mathrm{N=O}N=O, etc.
    • Sulphur is a third-period element and has larger atomic size. Effective pπ−pπp\pi-p\pipπ−pπ overlap is poor, so it does not easily form stable multiple bonds like oxygen.
    • Because of this, sulphur prefers catenation and single-bonded ring structures such as S8\mathrm{S}_8S8.

Hence, Reason (R) is also correct.

  3. Check whether (R) explains (A):

    • Oxygen exists as O2\mathrm{O}_2O2 because it can form a stable O=O\mathrm{O=O}O=O multiple bond.
    • Sulphur cannot form such strong multiple bonds due to poor pπ−pπp\pi-p\pipπ−pπ overlap, so it prefers larger ring structures like S8\mathrm{S}_8S8.

Therefore, (R) is the correct explanation of (A).

  4. Conclusion:
The correct option is D\boxed{D}D i.e. both Assertion and Reason are correct, and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion.
