P Block Elements question

2022 · 27 Jun · Shift 2 · Q14

JEE MainChemistryP Block ElementsMCQ+4 / −1

Match List I with List II.

List-I
(Anion)
List-II
(gas evolved on reaction with dil.H 2_22 SO 2_22)
(A) CO 32−{_3^{2 - }}32− I. Colourless gas which turns lead acetate paper black.
(B) S 2−^{2 - }2− II. Colourless gas which turns acidified potassium dichromate solution green.
(C) SO 32−{_3^{2 - }}32− III. Brown fumes which turns acidified KI solution containing starch blue.
(D) NO 2−{_2^ - }2− IV. Colourless gas evolved with brisk effervescence, which turns lime water milky.

Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. A
    A-III, B-I, C-II, D-IV
  2. B
    A-II, B-I, C-IV, D-III
  3. C
    A-IV, B-I, C-III, D-II
  4. D
    A-IV, B-I, C-II, D-III

Correct answer: D

  1. We identify the gas evolved when each anion reacts with dilute acid.

For dilute acid, the relevant reactions are:

  • CO32−\mathrm{CO_3^{2-}}CO32− gives CO2\mathrm{CO_2}CO2
  • S2−\mathrm{S^{2-}}S2− gives H2S\mathrm{H_2S}H2S
  • SO32−\mathrm{SO_3^{2-}}SO32− gives SO2\mathrm{SO_2}SO2
  • NO2−\mathrm{NO_2^-}NO2− gives products of nitrous acid decomposition, mainly NO\mathrm{NO}NO which is oxidized in air to NO2\mathrm{NO_2}NO2 (brown fumes)

  1. Match each with the description in List II.

(A) CO32−\mathrm{CO_3^{2-}}CO32−

On reaction with dilute acid: CO32−+2H+→CO2+H2O\mathrm{CO_3^{2-} + 2H^+ \to CO_2 + H_2O}CO32−+2H+→CO2+H2O CO2\mathrm{CO_2}CO2 is a colourless gas, evolved with brisk effervescence, and it turns lime water milky.

So, A→IVA \to IVA→IV

(B) S2−\mathrm{S^{2-}}S2−

On reaction with dilute acid: S2−+2H+→H2S\mathrm{S^{2-} + 2H^+ \to H_2S}S2−+2H+→H2S H2S\mathrm{H_2S}H2S is a colourless gas and turns lead acetate paper black due to formation of black PbS\mathrm{PbS}PbS.

So, B→IB \to IB→I

(C) SO32−\mathrm{SO_3^{2-}}SO32−

On reaction with dilute acid: SO32−+2H+→SO2+H2O\mathrm{SO_3^{2-} + 2H^+ \to SO_2 + H_2O}SO32−+2H+→SO2+H2O SO2\mathrm{SO_2}SO2 is a colourless gas and reduces acidified potassium dichromate from orange to green.

So, C→IIC \to IIC→II

(D) NO2−\mathrm{NO_2^-}NO2−

On reaction with dilute acid: NO2−+H+→HNO2\mathrm{NO_2^- + H^+ \to HNO_2}NO2−+H+→HNO2 Nitrous acid is unstable: 2HNO2→NO+NO2+H2O\mathrm{2HNO_2 \to NO + NO_2 + H_2O}2HNO2→NO+NO2+H2O The characteristic observed gas is brown fumes of NO2\mathrm{NO_2}NO2.

NO2\mathrm{NO_2}NO2 oxidizes iodide to iodine, and iodine turns starch blue: 2I−+2NO2+4H+→I2+2NO+2H2O\mathrm{2I^- + 2NO_2 + 4H^+ \to I_2 + 2NO + 2H_2O}2I−+2NO2+4H+→I2+2NO+2H2O

So, D→IIID \to IIID→III

  1. Final matching: A−IV,  B−I,  C−II,  D−IIIA-IV,\; B-I,\; C-II,\; D-IIIA−IV,B−I,C−II,D−III

This corresponds to Option D.
