P Block Elements question

2022 · 27 Jun · Shift 2 · Q4

JEE MainChemistryP Block ElementsMCQ+4 / −1
Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R. Assertion A : Fluorine forms one oxoacid. Reason R : Fluorine has smallest size amongst all halogens and is highly electronegative. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A.
  2. B
Both A and R are correct but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.
  3. C
A is correct but R is not correct.
  4. D
A is not correct but R is correct.

Correct answer: A

  1. Evaluate Assertion A

Assertion A says: Fluorine forms one oxoacid.

This is correct. Fluorine forms only one oxoacid: HOF\mathrm{HOF}HOF which is called hypofluorous acid.

  2. Evaluate Reason R

Reason R says: Fluorine has the smallest size amongst all halogens and is highly electronegative.

    This is also correct.

    Fluorine has:

    • very small atomic size,
    • highest electronegativity among all elements.
  3. Check whether R explains A

In oxoacids of halogens, the halogen generally shows positive oxidation states and forms bonds with oxygen.

    Fluorine, because of its:

    • very high electronegativity, and
    • small size,

does not show positive oxidation states like other halogens and hence does not form a series of oxoacids. It forms only one oxoacid, HOF\mathrm{HOF}HOF.

Therefore, the reason correctly explains why fluorine forms only one oxoacid.

  4. Conclusion

    • Assertion A is correct.
    • Reason R is correct.
    • Reason R is the correct explanation of Assertion A.

Hence, the correct option is: A\boxed{\text{A}}A

  5. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer: A

    My derived answer: A

    So, they agree.
