Correct answer: A

  1. Identify the nature of acetylene

    Acetylene is ethyne, HC≡CHHC\equiv CHHC≡CH.

It has two important types of reactivity:

    • It is an unsaturated hydrocarbon, so it can undergo addition reactions.
    • It is a terminal alkyne, so the hydrogen attached to the spspsp-hybridized carbon is slightly acidic.
  2. Check each option

    Option A: NaOHNaOHNaOH

NaOHNaOHNaOH is a strong base in water, but it is not strong enough to remove the acidic proton from acetylene to any significant extent.

Terminal alkynes react with very strong bases like NaNH2NaNH_2NaNH2, but not with ordinary NaOHNaOHNaOH.

Therefore, acetylene does not react with NaOHNaOHNaOH.

    Option B: ammonical AgNO3AgNO_3AgNO3

Terminal alkynes react with ammoniacal silver nitrate to form silver acetylide.

    HC≡CH+2AgNO3+2NH4OH→AgC≡CAg↓+2NH4NO3+2H2OHC\equiv CH + 2AgNO_3 + 2NH_4OH \rightarrow AgC\equiv CAg\downarrow + 2NH_4NO_3 + 2H_2OHC≡CH+2AgNO3+2NH4OH→AgC≡CAg↓+2NH4NO3+2H2O

So acetylene does react with ammoniacal AgNO3AgNO_3AgNO3.

    Option C: NaNaNa

Sodium metal reacts with the acidic hydrogen of acetylene to form sodium acetylide with evolution of hydrogen gas.

    HC≡CH+2Na→NaC≡CNa+H2HC\equiv CH + 2Na \rightarrow NaC\equiv CNa + H_2HC≡CH+2Na→NaC≡CNa+H2

So acetylene does react with NaNaNa.

    Option D: HClHClHCl

Acetylene undergoes addition reaction with HClHClHCl across the triple bond.

    HC≡CH+HCl→CH2=CHClHC\equiv CH + HCl \rightarrow CH_2=CHClHC≡CH+HCl→CH2=CHCl

Thus acetylene does react with HClHClHCl.

  3. Conclusion

The only reagent that will not react with acetylene is:

    A  :  NaOH\boxed{A\;:\; NaOH}A:NaOH

  4. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer: AAA

My derived answer is also AAA, so they agree.
