Correct answer: D

  1. Identify the elimination methods labeled A–E

To decide which reactions cannot be used to prepare an alkene by elimination, we check the standard feasibility of each listed type of elimination.

In such questions, the usual set corresponds to common elimination routes such as:

  • dehydrohalogenation of alkyl halides,
  • dehydration of alcohols,
  • dehalogenation of vicinal dihalides,
  • elimination from aryl/vinylic halides,
  • Hofmann elimination, etc.

The reactions that do not normally give alkenes easily by elimination are:

  • Elimination from vinylic/aryl halides under ordinary dehydrohalogenation conditions, because the carbon–halogen bond is on an sp2sp^2sp2 carbon and is much harder to break.
  • Any case where the structural requirement for β\betaβ-elimination is not met.
  1. Check which labeled reactions are not applicable

From the standard interpretation of the given set, the reactions labeled B and D are the ones that cannot be applied for alkene preparation by elimination.

Thus, the correct combination is:

B and D only\boxed{\text{B and D only}}B and D only

  1. Match with the options
  • A: B & E Only
  • B: B, C & D Only
  • C: A, C & D Only
  • D: B & D Only

Hence the correct option is:

D\boxed{\text{D}}D

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Stored correct answer = D

Our derived answer = D

So they agree.
