Given below are two statements : Statement (I) : Neopentane forms only one monosubstituted derivative. Statement (II) : Melting point of neopentane is higher than n-pentane. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
  2. B
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
  3. C
Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  4. D
Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect

Correct answer: B

  1. Analyze Statement (I): Neopentane forms only one monosubstituted derivative.

    • Neopentane is 2,22,22,2-dimethylpropane.
    • Its structure is highly symmetrical: C(CH3)4\mathrm{C(CH_3)_4}C(CH3)4
    • All 121212 hydrogen atoms in neopentane are equivalent because the four methyl groups are identical by symmetry.
    • Therefore, replacing any one hydrogen by another atom/group gives the same monosubstituted product.

    Hence, Statement (I) is correct.

  2. Analyze Statement (II): Melting point of neopentane is higher than n-pentane.

    • In general, branching lowers boiling point, but melting point depends strongly on molecular symmetry and crystal packing.
    • Neopentane is highly symmetrical, so it packs more efficiently in the crystal lattice.
    • Better packing increases lattice stability, which raises the melting point.
    • Thus, neopentane has a higher melting point than the less symmetrical nnn-pentane.

Hence, Statement (II) is also correct.

  3. Choose the correct option:

Since both statements are correct, the correct choice is: B\boxed{\text{B}}B

  4. Comparison with stored correct answer:

    • Derived answer: B\boxed{\text{B}}B
    • Stored correct answer: B\boxed{\text{B}}B

    They match.
