The standard cell potential (Ecell ⊖)\left(\mathrm{E}_{\text {cell }}^{\ominus}\right)(Ecell ⊖) of a fuel cell based on the oxidation of methanol in air that has been used to power television relay station is measured as 1.21 V . The standard half cell reduction potential for O2(EO2/H2O∘)\mathrm{O}_2\left(\mathrm{E}_{\mathrm{O}_2 / \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}}^{\circ}\right)O2(EO2/H2O∘) is 1.229 V . Choose the correct statement :
  1. A
Reactants are fed at one go to each electrode.
  2. B
Oxygen is formed at the anode.
  3. C
The standard half cell reduction potential for the reduction of CO2(ECO2/CH3OH∘)\mathrm{CO}_2\left(\mathrm{E}_{\mathrm{CO}_2 / \mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{OH}}^{\circ}\right)CO2(ECO2/CH3OH∘) is 19 mV
  4. D
Reduction of methanol takes place at the cathode.

Correct answer: C

  1. Write the fuel cell reaction

Methanol is oxidized by oxygen in air:

CH3OH+32O2→CO2+2H2O\mathrm{CH_3OH + \frac{3}{2}O_2 \rightarrow CO_2 + 2H_2O}CH3OH+23O2→CO2+2H2O

So:

  • methanol is oxidized at the anode,
  • oxygen is reduced at the cathode.

Hence immediately:

  • Option B is false because oxygen is not formed at the anode.
  • Option D is false because methanol does not get reduced at the cathode; it gets oxidized at the anode.

  1. Use the relation between cell potential and half-cell reduction potentials

For a galvanic/fuel cell,

Ecell∘=Ecathode∘−Eanode∘E^\circ_{\text{cell}} = E^\circ_{\text{cathode}} - E^\circ_{\text{anode}}Ecell∘=Ecathode∘−Eanode∘

Given:

Ecell∘=1.21 VE^\circ_{\text{cell}} = 1.21\,\text{V}Ecell∘=1.21V

and for oxygen reduction,

EO2/H2O∘=1.229 VE^\circ_{\mathrm{O_2/H_2O}} = 1.229\,\text{V}EO2/H2O∘=1.229V

Since oxygen is reduced at the cathode,

1.21=1.229−ECO2/CH3OH∘1.21 = 1.229 - E^\circ_{\mathrm{CO_2/CH_3OH}}1.21=1.229−ECO2/CH3OH∘

Therefore,

ECO2/CH3OH∘=1.229−1.21=0.019 VE^\circ_{\mathrm{CO_2/CH_3OH}} = 1.229 - 1.21 = 0.019\,\text{V}ECO2/CH3OH∘=1.229−1.21=0.019V

So,

ECO2/CH3OH∘=19 mVE^\circ_{\mathrm{CO_2/CH_3OH}} = 19\,\text{mV}ECO2/CH3OH∘=19mV

Thus Option C is correct.

  1. Check Option A

A fuel cell works by continuous supply of reactants to the electrodes; reactants are not fed "at one go" as in an ordinary cell.

So Option A is false.

  1. Final evaluation of options
  • A: False
  • B: False
  • C: True
  • D: False

Therefore, the correct answer is:

C\boxed{\text{C}}C
