JEE MainChemistryD and F Block ElementsMCQ+4 / −1
The amphoteric oxide among V2O3, V2O4\mathrm{V}_2 \mathrm{O}_3, \mathrm{~V}_2 \mathrm{O}_4V2O3, V2O4 and V2O5\mathrm{V}_2 \mathrm{O}_5V2O5, upon reaction with alkali leads to formation of an oxide anion. The oxidation state of V in the oxide anion is :
  1. A
    + 4
  2. B
    + 5
  3. C
    + 3
  4. D
    + 7

Correct answer: B

  1. Identify the amphoteric oxide among the given vanadium oxides

The oxidation states of vanadium are:

    • In V2O3\mathrm{V_2O_3}V2O3: 2x+3(−2)=0⇒x=+32x+3(-2)=0 \Rightarrow x=+32x+3(−2)=0⇒x=+3
    • In V2O4\mathrm{V_2O_4}V2O4: 2x+4(−2)=0⇒x=+42x+4(-2)=0 \Rightarrow x=+42x+4(−2)=0⇒x=+4
    • In V2O5\mathrm{V_2O_5}V2O5: 2x+5(−2)=0⇒x=+52x+5(-2)=0 \Rightarrow x=+52x+5(−2)=0⇒x=+5

    In general:

    • Lower oxidation state oxides are more basic
    • Higher oxidation state oxides are more acidic
    • Intermediate oxidation state oxides are often amphoteric

    Therefore:

    • V2O3\mathrm{V_2O_3}V2O3 is mainly basic
    • V2O5\mathrm{V_2O_5}V2O5 is acidic
    • V2O4\mathrm{V_2O_4}V2O4 is amphoteric
  2. Reaction of amphoteric oxide with alkali

Since V2O4\mathrm{V_2O_4}V2O4 is amphoteric, it reacts with alkali to form an oxoanion (oxide anion of vanadium), namely vanadate-type species.

On oxidation/alkaline treatment, vanadium forms vanadate ion where vanadium is in the +5+5+5 oxidation state, such as VO43−\mathrm{VO_4^{3-}}VO43− or related oxoanions.

  3. Find oxidation state of V in the oxide anion

    For example, in VO43−\mathrm{VO_4^{3-}}VO43−: x+4(−2)=−3x+4(-2)=-3x+4(−2)=−3 x−8=−3x-8=-3x−8=−3 x=+5x=+5x=+5

Hence, the oxidation state of V in the oxide anion formed is +5+5+5.

  4. Check options

    • A: +4+4+4 ❌
    • B: +5+5+5 ✅
    • C: +3+3+3 ❌
    • D: +7+7+7 ❌

Therefore, the correct answer is B.
