Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). Assertion (A) : Cu2+\mathrm{Cu^{2+}}Cu2+ in water is more stable than Cu+\mathrm{Cu^{+}}Cu+. Reason (R) : Enthalpy of hydration for Cu2+\mathrm{Cu^{2+}}Cu2+ is much less than that of Cu+\mathrm{Cu^{+}}Cu+. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Evaluate Assertion (A):
    Assertion: Cu2+\mathrm{Cu^{2+}}Cu2+ in water is more stable than Cu+\mathrm{Cu^+}Cu+.

    This is correct. In aqueous solution, Cu+\mathrm{Cu^+}Cu+ is unstable and tends to disproportionate: 2Cu+→Cu2++Cu2\mathrm{Cu^+} \rightarrow \mathrm{Cu^{2+}} + \mathrm{Cu}2Cu+→Cu2++Cu Hence, Cu2+\mathrm{Cu^{2+}}Cu2+ is more stable than Cu+\mathrm{Cu^+}Cu+ in water.

  2. Evaluate Reason (R):
    Reason: Enthalpy of hydration for Cu2+\mathrm{Cu^{2+}}Cu2+ is much less than that of Cu+\mathrm{Cu^+}Cu+.

    This statement is incorrect. Since Cu2+\mathrm{Cu^{2+}}Cu2+ has higher charge density than Cu+\mathrm{Cu^+}Cu+, its hydration enthalpy is much more negative (greater in magnitude) than that of Cu+\mathrm{Cu^+}Cu+.
