Correct answer: A

  1. Find oxidation state of Cr in chromyl chloride

    Chromyl chloride is CrO2Cl2\mathrm{CrO_2Cl_2}CrO2Cl2.

Let oxidation state of Cr be xxx.

    We know:

    • Oxygen =−2= -2=−2 each, so 2×(−2)=−42 \times (-2) = -42×(−2)=−4
    • Chlorine =−1= -1=−1 each, so 2×(−1)=−22 \times (-1) = -22×(−1)=−2

    Therefore, x−4−2=0x - 4 - 2 = 0x−4−2=0 x=+6x = +6x=+6

So chromium is in +6 oxidation state in CrO2Cl2\mathrm{CrO_2Cl_2}CrO2Cl2.

  2. Find number of d-electrons on Cr in Cr6+\mathrm{Cr^{6+}}Cr6+

Atomic number of Cr =24= 24=24

    Ground-state electronic configuration of Cr: Cr:[Ar]3d54s1\mathrm{Cr} : [Ar]3d^5 4s^1Cr:[Ar]3d54s1

    For Cr6+\mathrm{Cr^{6+}}Cr6+, remove 6 electrons:

    • first 1 from 4s4s4s
    • next 5 from 3d3d3d

    Hence, Cr6+:[Ar]3d0\mathrm{Cr^{6+}} : [Ar]3d^0Cr6+:[Ar]3d0

    So number of ddd-electrons =0= 0=0.

  3. Check each option

    A: Mn(VII)\mathrm{Mn(VII)}Mn(VII)

    Mn: [Ar]3d54s2[Ar]3d^5 4s^2[Ar]3d54s2

    Mn7+\mathrm{Mn^{7+}}Mn7+ means removal of 7 electrons: Mn7+:[Ar]3d0\mathrm{Mn^{7+}} : [Ar]3d^0Mn7+:[Ar]3d0 Number of ddd-electrons =0= 0=0

    This matches.

    B: Ti(III)\mathrm{Ti(III)}Ti(III)

    Ti: [Ar]3d24s2[Ar]3d^2 4s^2[Ar]3d24s2

    Ti3+\mathrm{Ti^{3+}}Ti3+: remove 2 from 4s4s4s and 1 from 3d3d3d Ti3+:[Ar]3d1\mathrm{Ti^{3+}} : [Ar]3d^1Ti3+:[Ar]3d1 Number of ddd-electrons =1= 1=1

    Does not match.

    C: Fe(III)\mathrm{Fe(III)}Fe(III)

    Fe: [Ar]3d64s2[Ar]3d^6 4s^2[Ar]3d64s2

    Fe3+\mathrm{Fe^{3+}}Fe3+: remove 2 from 4s4s4s and 1 from 3d3d3d Fe3+:[Ar]3d5\mathrm{Fe^{3+}} : [Ar]3d^5Fe3+:[Ar]3d5 Number of ddd-electrons =5= 5=5

    Does not match.

    D: V(IV)\mathrm{V(IV)}V(IV)

    V: [Ar]3d34s2[Ar]3d^3 4s^2[Ar]3d34s2

    V4+\mathrm{V^{4+}}V4+: remove 2 from 4s4s4s and 2 from 3d3d3d V4+:[Ar]3d1\mathrm{V^{4+}} : [Ar]3d^1V4+:[Ar]3d1 Number of ddd-electrons =1= 1=1

    Does not match.

  4. Conclusion

The number of ddd-electrons in chromium of chromyl chloride is same as in: Mn(VII)\boxed{\mathrm{Mn(VII)}}Mn(VII)

So the correct option is A.
