In neutral or faintly alkaline medium, KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO}_{4}KMnO4 being a powerful oxidant can oxidize, thiosulphate almost quantitatively, to sulphate. In this reaction overall change in oxidation state of manganese will be :
  1. A
    5
  2. B
    1
  3. C
    0
  4. D
    3

Correct answer: D

  1. Identify the oxidation state of Mn in KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4}KMnO4

In KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4}KMnO4:

  • K=+1\mathrm{K} = +1K=+1
  • 4O=−84\mathrm{O} = -84O=−8

So for Mn: +1+x−8=0⇒x=+7+1 + x - 8 = 0 \Rightarrow x = +7+1+x−8=0⇒x=+7

Thus, manganese starts at oxidation state +7+7+7.

  1. What happens to permanganate in neutral or faintly alkaline medium?

KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4}KMnO4 behaves differently in different media:

  • acidic medium: MnO4−→Mn2+\mathrm{MnO_4^- \to Mn^{2+}}MnO4−→Mn2+
  • neutral/faintly alkaline medium: MnO4−→MnO2\mathrm{MnO_4^- \to MnO_2}MnO4−→MnO2
  • strongly alkaline medium: MnO4−→MnO42−\mathrm{MnO_4^- \to MnO_4^{2-}}MnO4−→MnO42−

Here the medium is neutral or faintly alkaline, so Mn is reduced to MnO2\mathrm{MnO_2}MnO2.

In MnO2\mathrm{MnO_2}MnO2, oxidation state of Mn is: x+2(−2)=0⇒x=+4x + 2(-2) = 0 \Rightarrow x = +4x+2(−2)=0⇒x=+4

  1. Calculate the overall change in oxidation state of Mn

Initial oxidation state of Mn =+7= +7=+7

Final oxidation state of Mn =+4= +4=+4

Change: 7−4=37 - 4 = 37−4=3

So manganese undergoes a decrease of 3 units in oxidation state.

  1. Check options
  • A: 5 ❌
  • B: 1 ❌
  • C: 0 ❌
  • D: 3 ✅

Therefore, the correct answer is D.
