The disproportionation of MnO42−\mathrm{MnO}_{4}^{2-}MnO42− in acidic medium resulted in the formation of two manganese compounds A\mathrm{A}A and B\mathrm{B}B. If the oxidation state of Mn\mathrm{Mn}Mn in B\mathrm{B}B is smaller than that of A, then the spin-only magnetic moment (μ)(\mu)(μ) value of B in BM is ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}}. (Nearest integer)

Correct answer: 4

  1. Identify the species and oxidation state

The given ion is manganate, MnO42−\mathrm{MnO_4^{2-}}MnO42−.

Let oxidation state of Mn be xxx:

x+4(−2)=−2x + 4(-2) = -2x+4(−2)=−2 x−8=−2x - 8 = -2x−8=−2 x=+6x = +6x=+6

So, Mn is in the +6+6+6 oxidation state in MnO42−\mathrm{MnO_4^{2-}}MnO42−.

  1. Disproportionation in acidic medium

A species in an intermediate oxidation state can undergo disproportionation to form one species with higher oxidation state and one with lower oxidation state.

For MnO42−\mathrm{MnO_4^{2-}}MnO42− in acidic medium, the two Mn compounds formed are:

  • MnO4−\mathrm{MnO_4^-}MnO4−, where Mn is +7+7+7
  • MnO2\mathrm{MnO_2}MnO2, where Mn is +4+4+4

Thus:

  • AAA has higher oxidation state: MnO4−\mathrm{MnO_4^-}MnO4−
  • BBB has lower oxidation state: MnO2\mathrm{MnO_2}MnO2

So, in BBB, Mn is in the +4+4+4 state.

  1. Find the electronic configuration of Mn4+\mathrm{Mn^{4+}}Mn4+

Atomic number of Mn = 25.

Ground-state configuration of Mn:

Mn:[Ar] 3d54s2\mathrm{Mn}: [Ar] \, 3d^5 4s^2Mn:[Ar]3d54s2

For Mn4+\mathrm{Mn^{4+}}Mn4+, remove 2 electrons from 4s4s4s and 2 from 3d3d3d:

Mn4+:[Ar] 3d3\mathrm{Mn^{4+}}: [Ar] \, 3d^3Mn4+:[Ar]3d3

So number of unpaired electrons, n=3n = 3n=3.

  1. Calculate spin-only magnetic moment

Formula:

μ=n(n+2) BM\mu = \sqrt{n(n+2)} \text{ BM}μ=n(n+2) BM

Substitute n=3n = 3n=3:

μ=3(3+2)=15≈3.87 BM\mu = \sqrt{3(3+2)} = \sqrt{15} \approx 3.87 \text{ BM}μ=3(3+2)=15≈3.87 BM

Nearest integer:

4\boxed{4}4

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Derived answer = 444

Stored correct answer = 444

They agree.
