  3. In acidic solution, manganate disproportionates into:

    • permanganate, where manganese is in oxidation state +7+7+7
    • manganese dioxide or ultimately Mn2+\mathrm{Mn^{2+}}Mn2+ depending on medium, but the standard disproportionation of manganate is: 3MnO42−+4H+→2MnO4−+MnO2+2H2O3\mathrm{MnO_4^{2-}} + 4\mathrm{H^+} \rightarrow 2\mathrm{MnO_4^-} + \mathrm{MnO_2} + 2\mathrm{H_2O}3MnO42−​+4H+→2MnO4−​+MnO2​+2H2​O
  4. Let us check oxidation states of manganese in the products:

    • In MnO4−\mathrm{MnO_4^-}MnO4−​, Mn is +7+7+7
    • In MnO2\mathrm{MnO_2}MnO2​, Mn is +4+4+4
  5. Therefore, the two ions/species formed have oxidation states +7+7+7 and +4+4+4.

  6. Their difference is: 7−4=37 - 4 = 37−4=3
