  1. Find the oxidation state of chromium in chromate

    Chromate ion is CrO42−\text{CrO}_4^{2-}CrO42−​.

    Let the oxidation state of Cr be xxx.

    Since oxygen is −2-2−2 each, x+4(−2)=−2x + 4(-2) = -2x+4(−2)=−2 x−8=−2x - 8 = -2x−8=−2 x=+6x = +6x=+6

  2. Find the oxidation state of chromium in dichromate

    Dichromate ion is Cr2O72−\text{Cr}_2\text{O}_7^{2-}Cr2​O72−​.

    Let the oxidation state of each Cr be xxx.

    2x+7(−2)=−22x + 7(-2) = -22x+7(−2)=−2 2x−14=−22x - 14 = -22x−14=−2 2x=122x = 122x=12 x=+6x = +6x=+6

  3. Find the difference

    Oxidation state of chromium in chromate =+6= +6=+6

    Oxidation state of chromium in dichromate =+6= +6=+6

    Therefore, the difference is +6−(+6)=0+6 - (+6) = 0+6−(+6)=0

  4. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Derived answer =0= 0=0

    Stored correct answer =0= 0=0

    So, the answer agrees with the stored correct answer.
