JEE MainChemistryD and F Block ElementsMCQ+4 / −1
Knowing that the Chemistry of lanthanoids (Ln) is dominated by its +3 oxidation state, which of the following statements is incorrect?
  1. A
Because of the large size of the Ln (III) ions the bonding in its compounds is predominantly ionic in character.
  2. B
The ionic sizes of Ln (III) decrease in general with increasing atomic number.
  3. C
Ln (III) compounds are generally colourless
  4. D
Ln (III) hydroxides are mainly basic in character.

Correct answer: C

  1. Use the known general properties of lanthanoids in the +3 oxidation state

Lanthanoids predominantly form Ln3+\mathrm{Ln^{3+}}Ln3+ ions. Their chemistry shows some standard trends:

    • compounds are largely ionic,
    • ionic radii decrease across the series due to lanthanoid contraction,
    • hydroxides are generally basic,
    • many Ln3+\mathrm{Ln^{3+}}Ln3+ ions are coloured because of partially filled 4f4f4f orbitals.
  2. Check each option

Option A: "Because of the large size of the Ln3+\mathrm{Ln^{3+}}Ln3+ ions the bonding in its compounds is predominantly ionic in character."

This is correct. Lanthanoid ions are large electropositive metal ions, so their compounds are mainly ionic.

Option B: "The ionic sizes of Ln3+\mathrm{Ln^{3+}}Ln3+ decrease in general with increasing atomic number."

This is correct due to lanthanoid contraction.

Option C: "Ln3+\mathrm{Ln^{3+}}Ln3+ compounds are generally colourless"

This is incorrect. Many Ln3+\mathrm{Ln^{3+}}Ln3+ ions are coloured because of fff-fff electronic transitions. Although some ions like La3+\mathrm{La^{3+}}La3+ and Lu3+\mathrm{Lu^{3+}}Lu3+ are colourless, the general statement "generally colourless" is false.

Option D: "Ln3+\mathrm{Ln^{3+}}Ln3+ hydroxides are mainly basic in character."

This is correct. Lanthanoid hydroxides such as Ln(OH)3\mathrm{Ln(OH)_3}Ln(OH)3 are basic; in fact, their basicity decreases somewhat from La to Lu, but they remain mainly basic.

  3. Conclusion

    The incorrect statement is:

    C\boxed{\text{C}}C

  4. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer = C

    My derived answer = C

    Hence, they agree.
