D and F Block Elements question

2008 · Shift 0 · Q11

JEE MainChemistryD and F Block ElementsMCQ+4 / −1
Amount of oxalic acid present in a solution can be determined by its titration with KMnO4KMn{O_4}KMnO4 solution in the presence of H2SO4.{H_2}S{O_4}.H2SO4. The titration gives unsatisfactory result when carried out in the presence of HCl,HCl,HCl, because HClHClHCl :
  1. A
    gets oxidised by oxalic acid to chlorine
  2. B
    furnishes H+{H^ + }H+ ions in addition to those from oxalic acid
  3. C
    reduces permanganate to Mn2+M{n^{2 + }}Mn2+
  4. D
    oxaidises oxalic acid to carbon doxide and water

Correct answer: C

  1. What happens in the titration?

    In acidic medium, potassium permanganate oxidizes oxalic acid.

    The relevant reaction is: 2MnO4−+5H2C2O4+6H+→2Mn2++10CO2+8H2O2MnO_4^- + 5H_2C_2O_4 + 6H^+ \rightarrow 2Mn^{2+} + 10CO_2 + 8H_2O2MnO4−+5H2C2O4+6H+→2Mn2++10CO2+8H2O

    So, the titration must be carried out in an acidic medium, and usually dilute H2SO4H_2SO_4H2SO4 is used.

  2. Why is HClHClHCl not used?

    Permanganate is a strong oxidizing agent in acidic medium. In presence of HClHClHCl, the chloride ion Cl−Cl^-Cl− gets oxidized to chlorine gas.

    The reaction is: 2MnO4−+16H++10Cl−→2Mn2++8H2O+5Cl22MnO_4^- + 16H^+ + 10Cl^- \rightarrow 2Mn^{2+} + 8H_2O + 5Cl_22MnO4−+16H++10Cl−→2Mn2++8H2O+5Cl2

    Thus, HClHClHCl also reacts with KMnO4KMnO_4KMnO4, consuming permanganate and disturbing the titration result.

  3. Check the options

    A. gets oxidised by oxalic acid to chlorine
    Incorrect. Oxalic acid is a reducing agent; it does not oxidize HClHClHCl to chlorine.

    B. furnishes H+H^+H+ ions in addition to those from oxalic acid
    Incorrect. Acidic medium is required anyway; this is not the reason for unsatisfactory results.

    C. reduces permanganate to Mn2+Mn^{2+}Mn2+
    This is the closest correct statement in the given options. More precisely, chloride ion from HClHClHCl gets oxidized, thereby reducing permanganate to Mn2+Mn^{2+}Mn2+ and causing error.

    D. oxidises oxalic acid to carbon dioxide and water
    Incorrect. HClHClHCl is not an oxidizing agent here.

  4. Conclusion

    The titration gives unsatisfactory results in presence of HClHClHCl because HClHClHCl (through Cl−Cl^-Cl−) reacts with permanganate, reducing MnO4−MnO_4^-MnO4− to Mn2+Mn^{2+}Mn2+.

    Therefore, the correct option is: C\boxed{C}C
