Correct answer: A

  1. Write the structure of biuret

Biuret is formed by condensation of two urea molecules, and its structure is:

NH2−CO−NH−CO−NH2\mathrm{NH_2-CO-NH-CO-NH_2}NH2−CO−NH−CO−NH2

  1. Identify possible donor atoms

In coordination chemistry, denticity is the number of donor atoms of a ligand that can simultaneously bind to a metal ion.

In biuret, the atoms with lone pairs are mainly:

  • the oxygen atoms of the two carbonyl groups,
  • the nitrogen atoms.

However, the amide nitrogens in such compounds are generally poor donors because their lone pairs are delocalized due to resonance with the carbonyl groups.

So, the effective donor sites are the two carbonyl oxygen atoms.

  1. Determine denticity

Since biuret can coordinate through two donor atoms (the two carbonyl oxygens), it acts as a bidentate ligand.

Thus, its denticity is:

222

  1. Check the options
  • A: 2 ✅
  • B: 4 ❌
  • C: 3 ❌
  • D: 6 ❌

Therefore, the correct answer is A.
