Correct answer: 3

  1. We need to count molecules having zero dipole moment among: CH4, BF3, H2O, HF, NH3, CO2, SO2\mathrm{CH_4},\ \mathrm{BF_3},\ \mathrm{H_2O},\ \mathrm{HF},\ \mathrm{NH_3},\ \mathrm{CO_2},\ \mathrm{SO_2}CH4, BF3, H2O, HF, NH3, CO2, SO2

  2. Rule: A molecule has zero dipole moment if the bond dipoles cancel due to a symmetric geometry.

  3. Now check each molecule one by one.

(i) CH4\mathrm{CH_4}CH4

  • Geometry: tetrahedral
  • All four C−H\mathrm{C-H}C−H bonds are symmetrically arranged.
  • Bond dipoles cancel.

μ=0\mu = 0μ=0

So, CH4\mathrm{CH_4}CH4 has zero dipole moment.

(ii) BF3\mathrm{BF_3}BF3

  • Geometry: trigonal planar
  • Three identical B−F\mathrm{B-F}B−F bonds arranged symmetrically at 120∘120^\circ120∘.
  • Dipoles cancel.

μ=0\mu = 0μ=0

So, BF3\mathrm{BF_3}BF3 has zero dipole moment.

(iii) H2O\mathrm{H_2O}H2O

  • Geometry: bent (due to two lone pairs on O)
  • O−H\mathrm{O-H}O−H bond dipoles do not cancel.

μ≠0\mu \neq 0μ=0

So, H2O\mathrm{H_2O}H2O does not have zero dipole moment.

(iv) HF\mathrm{HF}HF

  • Diatomic molecule with different atoms.
  • Bond is polar, so molecule is polar.

μ≠0\mu \neq 0μ=0

So, HF\mathrm{HF}HF does not have zero dipole moment.

(v) NH3\mathrm{NH_3}NH3

  • Geometry: trigonal pyramidal (one lone pair on N)
  • Dipoles do not cancel.

μ≠0\mu \neq 0μ=0

So, NH3\mathrm{NH_3}NH3 does not have zero dipole moment.

(vi) CO2\mathrm{CO_2}CO2

  • Geometry: linear
  • Two identical C=O\mathrm{C=O}C=O bond dipoles are opposite and equal.
  • They cancel.

μ=0\mu = 0μ=0

So, CO2\mathrm{CO_2}CO2 has zero dipole moment.

(vii) SO2\mathrm{SO_2}SO2

  • Geometry: bent (due to lone pair on S)
  • Dipoles do not cancel.

μ≠0\mu \neq 0μ=0

So, SO2\mathrm{SO_2}SO2 does not have zero dipole moment.

  1. Molecules with zero dipole moment: CH4, BF3, CO2\mathrm{CH_4},\ \mathrm{BF_3},\ \mathrm{CO_2}CH4, BF3, CO2

  2. Total number: 333

Comparison with stored correct answer

  • Derived answer = 333
  • Stored correct answer = 333
  • They match.
