Correct answer: 4

  1. In ice, each water molecule has the ability to form hydrogen bonds because:

    • it has two hydrogen atoms, which can donate hydrogen bonds,
    • it has two lone pairs on oxygen, which can accept hydrogen bonds.
  2. Thus, one water molecule in ice forms a total of: 2 (donated)+2 (accepted)=4 hydrogen bonds2 \text{ (donated)} + 2 \text{ (accepted)} = 4 \text{ hydrogen bonds}2 (donated)+2 (accepted)=4 hydrogen bonds

  3. These hydrogen bonds are formed with four neighbouring water molecules in a tetrahedral arrangement.

Therefore, each water molecule in an ice crystal is hydrogen bonded to: 4\boxed{4}4 neighbouring molecules.
