  1. Interpret the question

We need to count how many of the given halides are inert to hydrolysis (i.e. they do not undergo hydrolysis with water).

The compounds are:

(A) BF3BF_3BF3​

Although boron is electron deficient, BF3BF_3BF3​ is resistant/inert to hydrolysis compared to other boron halides because of strong pπp\pipπ-pπp\pipπ back bonding between FFF and BBB. This gives the B−FB-FB−F bond partial double bond character and makes it difficult for water to hydrolyse it.

SiCl4SiCl_4SiCl4​ is readily hydrolysed by water:

SiCl4+2H2O→SiO2+4HClSiCl_4 + 2H_2O \rightarrow SiO_2 + 4HClSiCl4​+2H2​O→SiO2​+4HCl

So, SiCl4SiCl_4SiCl4​ is not inert to hydrolysis.


(C) PCl5PCl_5PCl5​

PCl5PCl_5PCl5​ also undergoes hydrolysis:

First step: PCl5+H2O→POCl3+2HClPCl_5 + H_2O \rightarrow POCl_3 + 2HClPCl5​+H2​O→POCl3​+2HCl

Further hydrolysis: POCl3+3H2O→H3PO4+3HClPOCl_3 + 3H_2O \rightarrow H_3PO_4 + 3HClPOCl3​+3H2​O→H3​PO4​+3HCl

Overall, it is clearly not inert to hydrolysis.


(D) SF6SF_6SF6​

SF6SF_6SF6​ is extremely stable and inert to hydrolysis because sulfur is sterically shielded by six fluorine atoms and the S−FS-FS−F bonds are very strong.

So, SF6SF_6SF6​ is inert to hydrolysis.


  1. Count the inert halides

Inert to hydrolysis:

  • BF3BF_3BF3​
  • SF6SF_6SF6​

Therefore, the number of halides inert to hydrolysis is

222


  1. Compare with stored correct answer

These do not match.
