Correct answer: A

  1. Paramagnetism criterion

A species is paramagnetic if it has one or more unpaired electrons. It is diamagnetic if all electrons are paired.

So we check the electronic configuration / molecular orbital (MO) configuration of each species.

  1. Option A: CO

CO has total electrons: 6+8=146 + 8 = 146+8=14 So CO is isoelectronic with N2N_2N2.

Its MO filling leads to all electrons paired: σ(1s)2 σ∗(1s)2 σ(2s)2 σ∗(2s)2 (π2px)2(π2py)2(σ2pz)2\sigma(1s)^2\,\sigma^*(1s)^2\,\sigma(2s)^2\,\sigma^*(2s)^2\,(\pi 2p_x)^2(\pi 2p_y)^2(\sigma 2p_z)^2σ(1s)2σ∗(1s)2σ(2s)2σ∗(2s)2(π2px)2(π2py)2(σ2pz)2

All electrons are paired, so CO is diamagnetic.

  1. Option B: O2O_2O2

O2O_2O2 has 16 electrons. Its MO configuration contains two unpaired electrons in antibonding π∗\pi^*π∗ orbitals: π∗(2px)1 π∗(2py)1\pi^*(2p_x)^1\,\pi^*(2p_y)^1π∗(2px)1π∗(2py)1

Hence O2O_2O2 is paramagnetic.

  1. Option C: B2B_2B2

B2B_2B2 has total electrons: 5+5=105 + 5 = 105+5=10

For lighter diatomic molecules, MO order is: σ(2s), σ∗(2s), π(2px)=π(2py), σ(2pz)\sigma(2s),\ \sigma^*(2s),\ \pi(2p_x)=\pi(2p_y),\ \sigma(2p_z)σ(2s), σ∗(2s), π(2px)=π(2py), σ(2pz)

After filling, π(2px)1 π(2py)1\pi(2p_x)^1\,\pi(2p_y)^1π(2px)1π(2py)1 so there are two unpaired electrons.

Hence B2B_2B2 is paramagnetic.

  1. Option D: NO

NO has total electrons: 7+8=157 + 8 = 157+8=15 An odd number of electrons means at least one electron remains unpaired. So NO is paramagnetic.

  1. Final conclusion

Among the given species, the one that is not paramagnetic is: CO\boxed{\text{CO}}CO

So the correct option is A.
