Kjeldahl's method cannot be used to estimate nitrogen for which of the following compounds?
  1. A
    C6H5NH2C_6H_5NH_2C6H5NH2
  2. B
    NH2−C∥O−NH2{\rm{N}}{{\rm{H}}_2} - \mathop C\limits^{\mathop \parallel \limits^O } - {\rm{N}}{{\rm{H}}_2}NH2−C∥O−NH2
  3. C
    C6H5NO2C_6H_5NO_2C6H5NO2
  4. D
    CH3CH2CH_3CH_2CH3CH2-C ≡\equiv≡ N

Correct answer: C

  1. Principle of Kjeldahl’s method

Kjeldahl’s method is used to estimate nitrogen when the nitrogen present in the compound can be converted into ammonium sulfate on digestion with concentrated H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4}H2SO4.

It does not work for nitrogen present in certain forms such as:

    • nitro group: −NO2-\mathrm{NO_2}−NO2
    • azo group: −N=N−-\mathrm{N=N}-−N=N−
    • ring nitrogen in some heterocyclic compounds
  2. Check each option

    A. C6H5NH2C_6H_5NH_2C6H5NH2 (aniline)
Nitrogen is present as an amino group (−NH2)(-\mathrm{NH_2})(−NH2). This is estimated by Kjeldahl’s method.
    So, A can be used.

    B. NH2CONH2\mathrm{NH_2CONH_2}NH2CONH2 (urea)
Nitrogen is present in amide-type form, which is converted to ammonium sulfate during digestion.
    So, B can be used.

    C. C6H5NO2C_6H_5NO_2C6H5NO2 (nitrobenzene)
Nitrogen is present in the nitro group (−NO2)(-\mathrm{NO_2})(−NO2). Kjeldahl’s method cannot estimate nitrogen in nitro compounds.
    So, C cannot be used.

    D. CH3CH2C≡NCH_3CH_2C\equiv NCH3CH2C≡N (propionitrile)
Nitrogen is present as a cyano group. In the usual JEE-level exceptions for Kjeldahl’s method, nitro, azo, and ring nitrogen are excluded; nitriles are not the standard exception here.
    So, D can be used.

  3. Conclusion

The compound for which Kjeldahl’s method cannot be used is: C6H5NO2\boxed{C_6H_5NO_2}C6H5NO2

  4. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer: C
    Derived answer: C
    Therefore, they agree.
