Given below are two statements : Statement I : Dimethyl ether is completely soluble in water. However, diethyl ether is soluble in water to a very small extent. Statement II : Sodium metal can be used to dry diethyl ether and not ethyl alcohol. In the light of given statements. choose the correct answer from the options given below
  1. A
Statement I is false but Statement II are true
  2. B
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  3. C
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  4. D
Both Statement I and Statement II are False

Correct answer: C

  1. Evaluate Statement I

    Statement I says:

    • Dimethyl ether is completely soluble in water.
    • Diethyl ether is soluble in water only to a very small extent.

    Reasoning:

    • Ethers can form hydrogen bonds with water through the oxygen atom.
    • Lower ethers, having smaller alkyl groups, are more soluble in water.
    • Dimethyl ether has very small hydrophobic groups, so it is highly soluble in water.
    • Diethyl ether has larger ethyl groups, so its hydrophobic character increases and its solubility in water becomes very small.

    Hence, Statement I is true.

  2. Evaluate Statement II

    Statement II says:

    • Sodium metal can be used to dry diethyl ether.
    • Sodium metal cannot be used to dry ethyl alcohol.

    Reasoning:

    • Sodium reacts with water: 2Na+2H2O→2NaOH+H22Na + 2H_2O \rightarrow 2NaOH + H_22Na+2H2O→2NaOH+H2 So sodium can remove traces of water from diethyl ether.
    • But sodium also reacts with ethyl alcohol itself: 2C2H5OH+2Na→2C2H5ONa+H22C_2H_5OH + 2Na \rightarrow 2C_2H_5ONa + H_22C2H5OH+2Na→2C2H5ONa+H2
    • Therefore, sodium cannot be used to dry ethanol because it reacts with the alcohol.

    Hence, Statement II is true.

  3. Choose the correct option

Since both statements are true, the correct option is: C\boxed{C}C

  4. Comparison with stored answer

    Stored correct answer: C

    My derived answer: C

    Therefore, the answers agree.
