Benzene is treated with oleum to produce compound (X)(\mathrm{X})(X) which when further heated with molten sodium hydroxide followed by acidification produces compound (Y)(\mathrm{Y})(Y).   1. Sulphonation of benzene with oleum

Benzene reacts with oleum to give benzenesulphonic acid:

C6H6→oleumC6H5SO3H\mathrm{C_6H_6 \xrightarrow[ ]{oleum} C_6H_5SO_3H}C6​H6​oleum​C6​H5​SO3​H

So, compound XXX is benzenesulphonic acid.

  1. Fusion with molten sodium hydroxide

Benzenesulphonic acid on heating with molten NaOH undergoes substitution of the −SO3H-\mathrm{SO_3H}−SO3​H group by −OH-\mathrm{OH}−OH to form sodium phenoxide, which on acidification gives phenol:

C6H5SO3H→moltenNaOHC6H5ONa→H+C6H5OH\mathrm{C_6H_5SO_3H \xrightarrow[molten]{NaOH} C_6H_5ONa \xrightarrow{H^+} C_6H_5OH}C6​H5​SO3​HNaOHmolten​C6​H5​ONaH+​C6​H5​OH

So, compound YYY is phenol.

  1. Treatment of phenol with zinc dust/metal

Phenol on heating with zinc dust is reduced to benzene:

C6H5OH+Zn→C6H6+ZnO\mathrm{C_6H_5OH + Zn \rightarrow C_6H_6 + ZnO}C6​H5​OH+Zn→C6​H6​+ZnO

So, compound ZZZ is benzene.

Therefore, the structure of ZZZ is benzene.
