The reaction of K3[Fe(CN)6]K_3[Fe(CN)_6]K3[Fe(CN)6] with freshly prepared FeSO4FeSO_4FeSO4 solution produces a dark blue precipitate called Turnbull's blue. Reaction of K4[Fe(CN)6]K_4[Fe(CN)_6]K4[Fe(CN)6] with the FeSO4FeSO_4FeSO4 solution in complete absence of air produces a white precipitate X, which turns blue in air. Mixing the FeSO4FeSO_4FeSO4 solution with NaNO3NaNO_3NaNO3, followed by a slow addition of concentrated H2SO4H_2SO_4H2SO4 through the side of the test tube produces a brown ring.Among the following, the brown ring is due to the formation of
  1. A
    [Fe(NO)2](SO4)2]2−[Fe(NO)_2](SO_4)_2]^{2-}[Fe(NO)2](SO4)2]2−
  2. B
    [Fe(NO)2](H2O)4]3+[Fe(NO)_2](H_2O)_4]^{3+}[Fe(NO)2](H2O)4]3+
  3. C
    [Fe(NO)4](SO4)2][Fe(NO)_4](SO_4)_2][Fe(NO)4](SO4)2]
  4. D
    [Fe(NO)(H2O)5]2+[Fe(NO)(H_2O)_5]^{2+}[Fe(NO)(H2O)5]2+

Correct answer: D

  1. Identify the test being described

The mixture of FeSO4FeSO_4FeSO4 solution with NaNO3NaNO_3NaNO3, followed by careful addition of concentrated H2SO4H_2SO_4H2SO4, is the brown ring test for nitrate ion.

  2. Species formed in the brown ring test

In acidic medium, nitrate ion oxidizes Fe2+Fe^{2+}Fe2+ and gets reduced to nitric oxide, NONONO.

    A simplified step is: NO3−+3Fe2++4H+→NO+3Fe3++2H2ONO_3^- + 3Fe^{2+} + 4H^+ \rightarrow NO + 3Fe^{3+} + 2H_2ONO3−+3Fe2++4H+→NO+3Fe3++2H2O

  3. Formation of the brown ring complex

The nitric oxide formed then coordinates with ferrous ion: [Fe(H2O)6]2++NO→[Fe(H2O)5(NO)]2++H2O[Fe(H_2O)_6]^{2+} + NO \rightarrow [Fe(H_2O)_5(NO)]^{2+} + H_2O[Fe(H2O)6]2++NO→[Fe(H2O)5(NO)]2++H2O

This nitrosyl complex is responsible for the characteristic brown ring.

  4. Match with the options

The brown ring complex is: [Fe(NO)(H2O)5]2+[Fe(NO)(H_2O)_5]^{2+}[Fe(NO)(H2O)5]2+

So the correct option is D.

  5. Check against stored answer

    Stored correct answer: D

    This matches the derived answer.
