Correct answer: A

  1. Key principle: precipitation by H2SH_2SH2S depends on [S2−][S^{2-}][S2−] in the medium

    In aqueous solution, H2SH_2SH2S is a weak acid: H2S⇌H++HS−H_2S \rightleftharpoons H^+ + HS^-H2S⇌H++HS− HS−⇌H++S2−HS^- \rightleftharpoons H^+ + S^{2-}HS−⇌H++S2−

    In an acidified solution, the concentration of H+H^+H+ is high, so both equilibria are suppressed to the left. Hence, the concentration of S2−S^{2-}S2− remains very small.

  2. Which metal sulfides precipitate in acidic medium?

    A metal sulfide MSMSMS will precipitate if its ionic product exceeds its solubility product: [M2+][S2−]>Ksp[M^{2+}][S^{2-}] > K_{sp}[M2+][S2−]>Ksp

    Since [S2−][S^{2-}][S2−] is very low in acidic medium, only those metal ions whose sulfides have extremely low KspK_{sp}Ksp will precipitate.

  3. Behavior of the given ions

    • Cu2+Cu^{2+}Cu2+ forms CuSCuSCuS, which is very insoluble and precipitates even in acidic medium.
    • Hg2+Hg^{2+}Hg2+ forms HgSHgSHgS, which is extremely insoluble and also precipitates in acidic medium.
    • Ni2+Ni^{2+}Ni2+ forms NiSNiSNiS, but it generally precipitates in alkaline/ammoniacal medium where [S2−][S^{2-}][S2−] is higher.
    • Mn2+Mn^{2+}Mn2+ forms MnSMnSMnS, which also requires basic medium for precipitation.
  4. Conclusion

    Therefore, on passing H2SH_2SH2S through an acidified solution containing Mn2+,Ni2+,Cu2+,Hg2+Mn^{2+}, Ni^{2+}, Cu^{2+}, Hg^{2+}Mn2+,Ni2+,Cu2+,Hg2+, the ions precipitated are: CuS and HgSCuS \text{ and } HgSCuS and HgS

  5. Option check

    • A: CuSCuSCuS and HgSHgSHgS ✅
    • B: MnSMnSMnS and CuSCuSCuS ❌ (MnSMnSMnS does not precipitate in acidic medium)
    • C: MnSMnSMnS and NiSNiSNiS ❌
    • D: NiSNiSNiS and HgSHgSHgS ❌ (NiSNiSNiS does not precipitate in acidic medium)

Hence, the correct answer is A.
