Correct answer: C

  1. Given force field

    F⃗=−xi^+yj^\vec F = -x\hat i + y\hat jF=−xi^+yj^

    We need the work done in moving the particle from A(1,0)A(1,0)A(1,0) to B(0,1)B(0,1)B(0,1) along the line segment joining them.

  2. Equation of the line segment

    The line through (1,0)(1,0)(1,0) and (0,1)(0,1)(0,1) is

    x+y=1⇒y=1−xx+y=1 \quad \Rightarrow \quad y=1-xx+y=1⇒y=1−x

    We can parametrize the path using xxx as parameter:

    r⃗(x)=xi^+(1−x)j^\vec r(x)=x\hat i +(1-x)\hat jr(x)=xi^+(1−x)j^

    where xxx goes from 111 to 000.

  3. Differential displacement

    dr⃗=dxi^+dyj^d\vec r = dx\hat i + dy\hat jdr=dxi^+dyj^

    Since y=1−xy=1-xy=1−x,

    dy=−dxdy=-dxdy=−dx

    Hence,

    dr⃗=dxi^−dxj^d\vec r = dx\hat i - dx\hat jdr=dxi^−dxj^

  4. Force along the path

    On the path, y=1−xy=1-xy=1−x, so

    F⃗=−xi^+(1−x)j^\vec F = -x\hat i + (1-x)\hat jF=−xi^+(1−x)j^

  5. Dot product F⃗⋅dr⃗\vec F\cdot d\vec rF⋅dr

    F⃗⋅dr⃗=(−x)dx+(1−x)(−dx)\vec F\cdot d\vec r = (-x)dx + (1-x)(-dx)F⋅dr=(−x)dx+(1−x)(−dx)

    =−x dx−(1−x)dx= -x\,dx -(1-x)dx=−xdx−(1−x)dx

    =−x dx−dx+x dx=−dx= -x\,dx -dx + x\,dx = -dx=−xdx−dx+xdx=−dx

  6. Work done

    W=∫ABF⃗⋅dr⃗=∫x=10(−dx)W=\int_A^B \vec F\cdot d\vec r = \int_{x=1}^{0} (-dx)W=∫ABF⋅dr=∫x=10(−dx)

    W=−[x]10=−(0−1)=1W = -[x]_{1}^{0} = -(0-1)=1W=−[x]10=−(0−1)=1

  7. Checking options

    The work done is

    1\boxed{1}1

    So the correct option is C.

  8. Comparison with stored answer

    Stored correct answer: C

    Derived answer: C

    They match.
