The pressure acting on a submarine is 3 ×\times× 105 Pa at a certain depth. If the depth is doubled, the percentage increase in the pressure acting on the submarine would be : (Assume that atmospheric pressure is 1 ×\times× 105 Pa density of water is 103 kg m −-− 3, g = 10 ms −-− 2)

Correct answer: B

  1. Pressure at depth in a liquid

The total pressure on the submarine at depth hhh is

P=Patm+ρghP = P_{\text{atm}} + \rho g hP=Patm+ρgh

Given initially,

P1=3×105 PaP_1 = 3 \times 10^5\,\text{Pa}P1=3×105Pa

Also,

Patm=1×105 PaP_{\text{atm}} = 1 \times 10^5\,\text{Pa}Patm=1×105Pa

So the hydrostatic pressure initially is

ρgh=P1−Patm\rho g h = P_1 - P_{\text{atm}}ρgh=P1−Patm

ρgh=3×105−1×105=2×105 Pa\rho g h = 3 \times 10^5 - 1 \times 10^5 = 2 \times 10^5\,\text{Pa}ρgh=3×105−1×105=2×105Pa

  1. Pressure when depth is doubled

If depth becomes 2h2h2h, hydrostatic pressure becomes

ρg(2h)=2ρgh=2(2×105)=4×105 Pa\rho g (2h) = 2\rho g h = 2(2 \times 10^5) = 4 \times 10^5\,\text{Pa}ρg(2h)=2ρgh=2(2×105)=4×105Pa

Hence new total pressure is

P2=Patm+ρg(2h)P_2 = P_{\text{atm}} + \rho g (2h)P2=Patm+ρg(2h)

P2=1×105+4×105=5×105 PaP_2 = 1 \times 10^5 + 4 \times 10^5 = 5 \times 10^5\,\text{Pa}P2=1×105+4×105=5×105Pa

  1. Increase in pressure

ΔP=P2−P1=5×105−3×105=2×105 Pa\Delta P = P_2 - P_1 = 5 \times 10^5 - 3 \times 10^5 = 2 \times 10^5\,\text{Pa}ΔP=P2−P1=5×105−3×105=2×105Pa

  1. Percentage increase

% increase=ΔPP1×100\%\text{ increase} = \frac{\Delta P}{P_1} \times 100% increase=P1ΔP×100

=2×1053×105×100= \frac{2 \times 10^5}{3 \times 10^5} \times 100=3×1052×105×100

=23×100=2003%= \frac{2}{3} \times 100 = \frac{200}{3}\%=32×100=3200%

  1. Option check
  • A: 2005%=40%\frac{200}{5}\% = 40\%5200%=40%
  • B: 2003%\frac{200}{3}\%3200% ✅
  • C: 3200%\frac{3}{200}\%2003%
  • D: 5200%\frac{5}{200}\%2005%

Therefore, the correct answer is Option B.
