The value of tension in a long thin metal wire has been changed from T1 to T2. The lengths of the metal wire at two different values of tension T1 and T2 are l1 and l2 respectively. The actual length of the metal wire is :

Correct answer: C

  1. Use the formula for extension of a wire

For a wire under tension TTT, the extension is

Δl=TLAY\Delta l = \frac{T L}{A Y}Δl=AYTL

where:

  • LLL = actual (natural) length of the wire,
  • AAA = cross-sectional area,
  • YYY = Young's modulus.

So the observed length under tension TTT is

l=L+TLAY=L(1+TAY)l = L + \frac{T L}{A Y} = L\left(1 + \frac{T}{A Y}\right)l=L+AYTL=L(1+AYT)

Let

k=1AYk = \frac{1}{A Y}k=AY1

Then

l=L(1+kT)l = L(1+kT)l=L(1+kT)

  1. Write equations for the two tensions

At tension T1T_1T1, length is l1l_1l1:

l1=L(1+kT1)l_1 = L(1+kT_1)l1=L(1+kT1)

At tension T2T_2T2, length is l2l_2l2:

l2=L(1+kT2)l_2 = L(1+kT_2)l2=L(1+kT2)

  1. Eliminate kkk to find LLL

Multiply the first equation by T2T_2T2:

T2l1=L(T2+kT1T2)T_2 l_1 = L(T_2 + kT_1T_2)T2l1=L(T2+kT1T2)

Multiply the second equation by T1T_1T1:

T1l2=L(T1+kT1T2)T_1 l_2 = L(T_1 + kT_1T_2)T1l2=L(T1+kT1T2)

Now subtract:

T1l2−T2l1=L(T1−T2)T_1 l_2 - T_2 l_1 = L(T_1 - T_2)T1l2−T2l1=L(T1−T2)

Hence,

L=T1l2−T2l1T1−T2L = \frac{T_1 l_2 - T_2 l_1}{T_1 - T_2}L=T1−T2T1l2−T2l1

  1. Match with the options

This corresponds to:

T1l2−T2l1T1−T2\boxed{\frac{T_1 l_2 - T_2 l_1}{T_1 - T_2}}T1−T2T1l2−T2l1

So the correct option is C.

  1. Verification with stored answer

Stored correct answer: C

Our derived answer: C

They match.
