  1. Use the relation for shear deformation

For a cube under tangential force,

Shear stress=FA,Shear strain=xL\text{Shear stress} = \frac{F}{A}, \qquad \text{Shear strain} = \frac{x}{L}Shear stress=AF​,Shear strain=Lx​

and for the same material,

modulus of rigidity η=shear stressshear strain\text{modulus of rigidity } \eta = \frac{\text{shear stress}}{\text{shear strain}}modulus of rigidity η=shear strainshear stress​

So,

η=F/Ax/L=FLAx\eta = \frac{F/A}{x/L} = \frac{FL}{Ax}η=x/LF/A​=AxFL​

Since the material is same and conditions are similar, η\etaη remains constant.


  1. For the first cube

Side of cube:

L1=10 cmL_1 = 10\text{ cm}L1​=10 cm

Area of face:

Force:

F1=105 NF_1 = 10^5\text{ N}F1​=105 N

Displacement:

Side:

L2=20 cmL_2 = 20\text{ cm}L2​=20 cm

Area:

Force is applied under similar conditions, so take the same tangential force:

F2=105 NF_2 = 10^5\text{ N}F2​=105 N

Let displacement be x2x_2x2​.


  1. Equate rigidity modulus for same material
F1L1A1x1=F2L2A2x2\frac{F_1L_1}{A_1x_1} = \frac{F_2L_2}{A_2x_2}A1​x1​F1​L1​​=A2​x2​F2​L2​​

Since F1=F2F_1 = F_2F1​=F2​,

L1A1x1=L2A2x2\frac{L_1}{A_1x_1} = \frac{L_2}{A_2x_2}A1​x1​L1​​=A2​x2​L2​​

So,

x2=x1⋅L2L1⋅A1A2x_2 = x_1\cdot \frac{L_2}{L_1}\cdot \frac{A_1}{A_2}x2​=x1​⋅L1​L2​​⋅A2​A1​​

Substitute values:
