  1. Pressure excess in a soap bubble

For a soap bubble of radius rrr, the excess pressure inside over outside is

ΔP=4Tr\Delta P = \frac{4T}{r}ΔP=r4T​

where TTT is the surface tension.


  1. Pressure inside the outer bubble

The outer bubble has radius 6 cm6\text{ cm}6 cm and outside pressure is P0P_0P0​. So pressure inside the outer bubble is

P1=P0+4T6P_1 = P_0 + \frac{4T}{6}P1​=P0​+64T​


  1. Pressure inside the inner bubble

The inner bubble has radius 4 cm4\text{ cm}4 cm and it is surrounded by the air inside the outer bubble, whose pressure is P1P_1P1​. Thus pressure inside the inner bubble is

P2=P1+4T4P_2 = P_1 + \frac{4T}{4}P2​=P1​+44T​

Substitute P1P_1P1​:

P2=P0+4T6+4T4P_2 = P_0 + \frac{4T}{6} + \frac{4T}{4}P2​=P0​+64T​+44T​

So,

P2−P0=4T6+4T4P_2 - P_0 = \frac{4T}{6} + \frac{4T}{4}P2​−P0​=64T​+44T​

Take LCM:

P2−P0=4T(16+14)=4T(2+312)=4T⋅512=5T3P_2 - P_0 = 4T\left(\frac{1}{6} + \frac{1}{4}\right) = 4T\left(\frac{2+3}{12}\right) = 4T\cdot \frac{5}{12} = \frac{5T}{3}P2​−P0​=4T(61​+41​)=4T(122+3​)=4T⋅125​=35T​


  1. Equivalent single soap bubble

Let the radius of another soap bubble be RRR. Its pressure difference between inside and outside is given as P2−P0P_2-P_0P2​−P0​.

Hence,

4TR=5T3\frac{4T}{R} = \frac{5T}{3}R4T​=35T​

Cancel TTT:

4R=53\frac{4}{R} = \frac{5}{3}R4​=35​

R=125=2.4 cmR = \frac{12}{5} = 2.4\text{ cm}R=512​=2.4 cm
