JEE MainPhysicsMotion in A Straight LineMCQ+4 / −1
The position-time graphs for two students A and B returning from the school to their homes are shown in figure. JEE Main 2023 (Online) 10th April Morning Shift Physics - Motion in a Straight Line Question 26 English (A) A lives closer to the school (B) B lives closer to the school (C) A takes lesser time to reach home (D) A travels faster than B (E) B travels faster than A Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. A
    (A), (C) and (D) only
  2. B
    (A) and (E) only
  3. C
    (A), (C) and (E) only
  4. D
    (B) and (E) only

Correct answer: B

  1. Interpret the position–time graph

    In a position–time graph:

    • The final position gives the distance of home from the school.
    • The slope of the graph gives the speed.
    • The time coordinate of the endpoint gives the time taken to reach home.
  2. Compare home distances

From the graph, student A reaches a smaller final position than student B. Therefore, A lives closer to the school.

So, statement (A) is true and (B) is false.

  3. Compare time taken

From the graph, the endpoint for A occurs at a larger time than that for B. Hence, A takes more time, not lesser time, to reach home.

    Therefore, statement (C) is false.

  4. Compare speeds using slope

    Speed is the slope of the position–time graph: v=ΔxΔtv = \frac{\Delta x}{\Delta t}v=ΔtΔx

The graph of B is steeper than that of A. Hence, vB>vAv_B > v_AvB>vA

So, statement (D) is false and (E) is true.

  5. Select correct combination

    True statements are:

    • (A) A lives closer to the school
    • (E) B travels faster than A

Therefore, the correct option is B: (A) and (E) only.
