JEE MainPhysicsMotion in A Straight LineMCQ+4 / −1
Water droplets are coming from an open tap at a particular rate. The spacing between a droplet observed at 4th second after its fall to the next droplet is 34.3 m. At what rate the droplets are coming from the tap ? (Take g = 9.8 m/s2)
  1. A
    3 drops / 2 sconds
  2. B
    2 drops / second
  3. C
    1 drop / second
  4. D
    1 drop / 7 seconds

Correct answer: C

  1. Let the time interval between successive droplets be TTT seconds.

  2. Consider two successive droplets:

    • The lower droplet has been falling for 444 s when observed.
    • The next droplet was released TTT seconds later, so at that same instant it has been falling for (4−T)(4-T)(4−T) s.
  3. Distance fallen by a droplet in free fall from rest after time ttt is s=12gt2s=\frac{1}{2}gt^2s=21gt2

    Hence,

    • Distance fallen by the first droplet: s1=12g(4)2=12⋅9.8⋅16s_1=\frac{1}{2}g(4)^2=\frac{1}{2}\cdot 9.8 \cdot 16s1=21g(4)2=21⋅9.8⋅16
    • Distance fallen by the next droplet: s2=12g(4−T)2s_2=\frac{1}{2}g(4-T)^2s2=21g(4−T)2
  4. The spacing between them is given as 34.334.334.3 m: s1−s2=34.3s_1-s_2=34.3s1−s2=34.3 12g[16−(4−T)2]=34.3\frac{1}{2}g\left[16-(4-T)^2\right]=34.321g[16−(4−T)2]=34.3

  5. Substitute g=9.8g=9.8g=9.8: 4.9[16−(4−T)2]=34.34.9\left[16-(4-T)^2\right]=34.34.9[16−(4−T)2]=34.3 16−(4−T)2=34.34.9=716-(4-T)^2=\frac{34.3}{4.9}=716−(4−T)2=4.934.3=7 (4−T)2=9(4-T)^2=9(4−T)2=9

  6. So, 4−T=±34-T=\pm 34−T=±3 giving T=1 sorT=7 sT=1 \text{ s} \quad \text{or} \quad T=7 \text{ s}T=1 sorT=7 s

  7. Now check physically: Since the second droplet must already have fallen at the observation instant, we need 4−T≥0⇒T≤44-T\ge 0 \Rightarrow T\le 44−T≥0⇒T≤4 Therefore, T=1 sT=1 \text{ s}T=1 s is valid, while T=7T=7T=7 s is not possible.

  8. Thus droplets are coming at the rate of 1 drop per second1 \text{ drop per second}1 drop per second

  9. Checking options:

    • A: 333 drops / 222 s =1.5=1.5=1.5 drops/s ❌
    • B: 222 drops / s ❌
    • C: 111 drop / s ✅
    • D: 111 drop / 777 s ❌

Therefore, the correct option is C.
