JEE MainPhysicsLaws of MotionMCQ+4 / −1
A spring whose unstretched length is l has a force constant k. The spring is cut into two pieces of unstretched lengths l1 and l2 where, l1 = nl2 and n is an integer. The ratio k1/k2 of the corresponding force constant, k1 and k2 will be :
  1. A
    1n2{1 \over {{n^2}}}n21
  2. B
    1n{1 \over n}n1
  3. C
    n2
  4. D
    n

Correct answer: B

  1. Relation between spring constant and length

For a uniform spring, the spring constant is inversely proportional to its length:

k∝1Lk \propto \frac{1}{L}k∝L1

So if a spring of length lll has spring constant kkk, then for a piece of length LLL,

k′=klLk' = k\frac{l}{L}k′=kLl

  1. Given lengths of the two pieces

The spring is cut into two parts of lengths l1l_1l1 and l2l_2l2 such that

l1=nl2l_1 = n l_2l1=nl2

  1. Spring constants of the two pieces

For the piece of length l1l_1l1,

k1=kll1k_1 = k\frac{l}{l_1}k1=kl1l

For the piece of length l2l_2l2,

k2=kll2k_2 = k\frac{l}{l_2}k2=kl2l

  1. Find the ratio

k1k2=kll1kll2=l2l1\frac{k_1}{k_2} = \frac{k\frac{l}{l_1}}{k\frac{l}{l_2}} = \frac{l_2}{l_1}k2k1=kl2lkl1l=l1l2

Using l1=nl2l_1 = n l_2l1=nl2,

k1k2=l2nl2=1n\frac{k_1}{k_2} = \frac{l_2}{n l_2} = \frac{1}{n}k2k1=nl2l2=n1

  1. Correct option

k1k2=1n\boxed{\frac{k_1}{k_2} = \frac{1}{n}}k2k1=n1

So the correct answer is Option B.
