The rms speeds of the molecules of Hydrogen, Oxygen and Carbon dioxide at the same temperature are VH, VO and VC respectively then :
  1. A
    VH > VO > VC
  2. B
    VC > VO > VH
  3. C
    VH = VO > VC
  4. D
    VH = VO = VC

Correct answer: A

  1. For a gas at temperature TTT, the root mean square speed is

vrms=3RTMv_{\text{rms}}=\sqrt{\frac{3RT}{M}}vrms=M3RT

where MMM is the molar mass of the gas.

  1. Since all three gases are at the same temperature, and 3RT3RT3RT is the same for all, we have

vrms∝1Mv_{\text{rms}} \propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{M}}vrms∝M1

So, smaller molar mass means greater rms speed.

  1. Molar masses:
  • Hydrogen H2H_2H2: MH=2M_H = 2MH=2
  • Oxygen O2O_2O2: MO=32M_O = 32MO=32
  • Carbon dioxide CO2CO_2CO2: MC=44M_C = 44MC=44
  1. Compare speeds using inverse square root dependence:

vH∝12,vO∝132,vC∝144v_H \propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}, \quad v_O \propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{32}}, \quad v_C \propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{44}}vH∝21,vO∝321,vC∝441

Since

2<32<442 < 32 < 442<32<44

therefore

12>132>144\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}} > \frac{1}{\sqrt{32}} > \frac{1}{\sqrt{44}}21>321>441

Hence,

VH>VO>VCV_H > V_O > V_CVH>VO>VC

  1. Option check:
  • A: VH>VO>VCV_H > V_O > V_CVH>VO>VC ✅
  • B: VC>VO>VHV_C > V_O > V_HVC>VO>VH ❌
  • C: VH=VO>VCV_H = V_O > V_CVH=VO>VC ❌
  • D: VH=VO=VCV_H = V_O = V_CVH=VO=VC ❌

Therefore, the correct option is A.
