Correct answer: 40

  1. In a meter bridge at balance point, the ratio of resistances in the two gaps equals the ratio of resistances of the two segments of the bridge wire:

R1R2=RACRCB\frac{R_1}{R_2}=\frac{R_{AC}}{R_{CB}}R2R1=RCBRAC

Since the wire is uniform,

R=ρLAR = \rho \frac{L}{A}R=ρAL

So for the two segments of the same wire,

RACRCB=ρlAρ100−lA=l100−l\frac{R_{AC}}{R_{CB}}=\frac{\rho \frac{l}{A}}{\rho \frac{100-l}{A}}=\frac{l}{100-l}RCBRAC=ρA100−lρAl=100−ll

where lll is the balancing length in cm.

  1. Initially, the balance point is at

l=40 cml=40\text{ cm}l=40 cm

So,

R1R2=4060=23\frac{R_1}{R_2}=\frac{40}{60}=\frac{2}{3}R2R1=6040=32

  1. Now the radius of the wire ABABAB is doubled.

If radius rrr is doubled, cross-sectional area becomes

A′=π(2r)2=4πr2=4AA' = \pi (2r)^2 = 4\pi r^2 = 4AA′=π(2r)2=4πr2=4A

Hence resistance per unit length becomes one-fourth:

ρA′=14ρA\frac{\rho}{A'}=\frac{1}{4}\frac{\rho}{A}A′ρ=41Aρ

But this change happens uniformly throughout the entire bridge wire.

So the resistance of segment ACACAC and segment CBCBCB both become one-fourth of their original values:

RAC′=14RAC,RCB′=14RCBR'_{AC}=\frac{1}{4}R_{AC}, \qquad R'_{CB}=\frac{1}{4}R_{CB}RAC′=41RAC,RCB′=41RCB

Therefore their ratio remains unchanged:

RAC′RCB′=RACRCB\frac{R'_{AC}}{R'_{CB}}=\frac{R_{AC}}{R_{CB}}RCB′RAC′=RCBRAC

Thus the balance condition remains at the same length.

  1. Therefore, the new balancing length is

40 cm\boxed{40\text{ cm}}40 cm
