The radius of electron's second stationary orbit in Bohr's atom is R. The radius of 3rd orbit will be
  1. A
    2.25R
  2. B
    3R3 \mathrm{R}3R
  3. C
    R3\frac{\mathrm{R}}{3}3R
  4. D
    9R9 \mathrm{R}9R

Correct answer: A

  1. In Bohr’s model, the radius of the nnnth stationary orbit is

rn∝n2r_n \propto n^2rn∝n2

More specifically,

rn=a0n2r_n = a_0 n^2rn=a0n2

where a0a_0a0 is the Bohr radius.

  1. Given that the radius of the second orbit is RRR:

r2=a0(2)2=4a0=Rr_2 = a_0(2)^2 = 4a_0 = Rr2=a0(2)2=4a0=R

  1. The radius of the third orbit is

r3=a0(3)2=9a0r_3 = a_0(3)^2 = 9a_0r3=a0(3)2=9a0

  1. Now compare r3r_3r3 with r2r_2r2:

r3r2=9a04a0=94\frac{r_3}{r_2} = \frac{9a_0}{4a_0} = \frac{9}{4}r2r3=4a09a0=49

So,

r3=94R=2.25Rr_3 = \frac{9}{4}R = 2.25Rr3=49R=2.25R

  1. Checking options:
  • A: 2.25R2.25R2.25R ✅
  • B: 3R3R3R ❌
  • C: R3\frac{R}{3}3R ❌
  • D: 9R9R9R ❌

Therefore, the correct answer is A.
