In series LCR circuit, the capacitance is changed from CCC to 4C4 C4C. To keep the resonance frequency unchanged, the new inductance should be:
  1. A
    increased by 2 L2 \mathrm{~L}2 L
  2. B
    reduced by 14 L\frac{1}{4} \mathrm{~L}41 L
  3. C
    reduced by 34 L\frac{3}{4} \mathrm{~L}43 L
  4. D
    increased to 4 L4 \mathrm{~L}4 L

Correct answer: C

  1. For a series LCR circuit, the resonance frequency is
f0=12πLC. f_0 = \frac{1}{2\pi\sqrt{LC}}.f0=2πLC1.
  1. To keep the resonance frequency unchanged, the quantity LCLCLC must remain constant.

So initially,

LC=constant.LC = \text{constant}.LC=constant.
  1. The capacitance is changed from CCC to 4C4C4C. Let the new inductance be L′L'L′. Then for the same resonance frequency,
L′⋅4C=LC.L'\cdot 4C = LC.L′⋅4C=LC.
  1. Solving for L′L'L′:
L′=LC4C=L4.L' = \frac{LC}{4C} = \frac{L}{4}.L′=4CLC=4L.

So the new inductance must become L4\frac{L}{4}4L.

  1. Change in inductance:
ΔL=L−L4=3L4.\Delta L = L - \frac{L}{4} = \frac{3L}{4}.ΔL=L−4L=43L.

Thus the inductance is reduced by

34L.\frac{3}{4}L.43L.
  1. Checking options:
  • A: increased by 2L2L2L — incorrect
  • B: reduced by 14L\frac{1}{4}L41L — incorrect
  • C: reduced by 34L\frac{3}{4}L43L — correct
  • D: increased to 4L4L4L — incorrect

Therefore, the correct option is C.
